Have you ever been to France before? It is not only a country of great food, fashion and art. It’s also home to the most influential painters in the world.
Edouard Manet
He was one of the first artists to paint modern life. He began to paint in his own style, but still used some of Couture’s techniques like thick lines and dark colors. He was greatly influenced by Claude Monet and Berthe Morisot, which can be seen in his use of light shades. Most of his paintings had scenes of daily life on the streets of Paris. His works include Olympia and The Absinthe Drinker.
Camille Pissarro
In his early years, Pissarro painted scenes of a river or a path from memory. After meeting Claude Monet and Paul Cezanne, who painted in a more realistic style, he changed his course to Impressionism. During his career, he experimented with various styles, and finally formed his own one. His works include Old Market at Rouen and Sunset at St. Charles.
Vincent van Gogh
He had a huge influence on art in the 20th century. His early works were most painted in somber tones. However, influenced by Monet, Pissarro, and Bernard, he adopted brighter colors in his works, and started creating his own techniques. Although he had produced more than 2,000 works of art, the artist sold only one painting during his lifetime — Red Vineyard at Arles. His works include The Potato Eaters,
Starry Night and Bedroom in Arles.
Claude Monet
He was the founder of the Impressionist movement and completely changed the French painting in the 19th century. Although he first started by selling charcoal caricatures(木炭讽刺画)in Paris, he soon started painting with oil after meeting Eugene Boudin, who taught him to use oil paints and also encouraged him to paint outdoors. And then he painted with his own style. His works include Impression, Sunrise and The Water Liles.

Rey Castueiano didn’t plan to become his father’s primary caregiver, but when Castuciano spent six weeks in a nursing home with his father who had a stroke(中风),it led to a moment that changed Castuciano’s life for the better.
“I befriended a lot of the nursing home residents(居民),”Castuciano says.“I got to know them and noticed how many talents and how much wisdom they had.But there was also a lot of depression and social isolation.”
During one of his stops in the nursing home’s cafe,he watched a video about seniors in the United States helping Brazilian students improve their English through Skype sessions.
That’s when his idea was born.He saw a way to benefit two populations, older Americans and newcomers,at once. And in 2014,he founded Table Wisdom, whose mission is to bring together mature adults and younger people born abroad(i.e.,recent immigrants and international students)for weekly guidance and conversational English via video chat.
“Being a caregiver wasn’t something I was prepared to do.”he notes.“It was kind of just presented to me,and I had to figure it out.It can be very exhausting and stressful, balancing caregiving with being the founder of a social enterprise. But at the same time,it's satisfying and rewarding work.”And Castueiano says that he’s on the fight path.To date,Table Wisdom has made more than 90 matches. To match people, common interests and personality type are taken into consideration.
Most connect by whatever video software they prefer(for example, FaceTime or WeChat). For the older adults who struggle with technology or don’t have a reliable internet connection, conversations can take place by phone.
These days,Castuciano is planning to help his parents reunite with family members in southern California, since his father is now doing well.He says,“Taking care of older people is embedded(融入)in our culture.”

On her first morning in America last summer, my daughter went out to explore her new neighborhood alone, without even telling my wife or me. Of course we were worried; we had just moved from Berlin, and she was just 8. But when she came home, we realized we had no reason to panic. Beaming with pride, she told us how she had discovered the little park around the corner, and had made friends with a few local dog owners.
When this story comes up in conversations with American friends, we usually meet with polite disbelief. Most are horrified by the idea that their children might roam(闲逛) around without adult supervision(监管).
A study by the University of California has found that American kids spend 90 percent of their free time at home, often in front of the TV or playing video games. Such narrowing of children's world has happened across the developed world. But German parents are generally much more accepting of letting children take some risks.
“We are depriving(剥夺) them of opportunities to learn how to take control of their own lives,” writes Peter Gray, a research professor at Boston College. He argues that this increases the chance that they will suffer from anxiety, depression, and various other mental disorders, which have gone up dramatically in recent decades(十年).
I am no psychologist like Professor Gray, but I know I won't be around forever to protect my girls from the challenges life holds in store for them. And by giving kids more control over their lives, they learn to have more confidence in their own abilities.
8. Hearing the author's daughter exploring the new neighborhood alone, his American
friends feel________.
A. worried B. proud
C. doubtful D. terrified
