W: I’m a secretary at an architecture firm.

M: That sounds like a pretty good job. Why do you want to change your job? W: It’s hard to tell, but generally speaking, I want to have some demanding jobs.

Text two

W: I really enjoy the tape you lent me a week ago. M: I’m glad you like it.

W: Not only me. All my classmates enjoyed it, too. Do you mind if I keep it for another week? M: Sorry, I have to use it myself.

Text three

W: Alan, have you got a meeting in Edingburg?

M: Yes, I’m going to see some leaders from the headquarters, why?

W: I’m going to visit Glasgow on Wednesday and it’s quite near Edingburg. M: Ah…I’m going to drive there tomorrow, so you can go with me.

Text four

M: Tina, I think that you needn’t wash your clothes so late. W: I didn’t catch what you said.

M: I mean, the flowing water makes lots of noise. W: Oh, sorry! I didn’t know it was bothering you.

Text five

W: How was your job interview yesterday, Peter? M: Well, it couldn’t have been worse.

W: Why? You said you were well prepared.

M: I don’t know. There were several questions I couldn’t answer.

Text six

M: Hello, Mary. Is it true you’re going to leave us?

W: Maybe, but it still depends on Jack. If he gets the job, then we’ll have to move to Boswell. M: You’re going to miss Highland Park, aren’t you?

W: Oh, definitely. But it’s a much greater opportunity for Jack. His salary will be higher and he’ll have a much better position. He’ll manage the whole sales department. Also, there are better schools for the children. The town isn’t half as nice as Highland Park, of course.

M: Yes, there are so many factories. There’s probably a lot of air pollution, isn’t there? W: Yes, and not many green areas. But that’s life, I guess. M: Are you going to stop working?

W: I believe I’ll have to at first, but I intend to go back as soon as we settle down. I may get a job teaching. There’s a new high school there and they’re looking for teachers.

Text seven

M: I’m wondering if it’s going to be fine this afternoon.

W: So what?

M: The sports meeting! It’s fixed at 2:00, but the fog! You can only see a short distance. W: But don’t you think the wind is beginning to lift up? I bet it will be fine this afternoon. M: Don’t be so sure.

W: You’ve heard the forecast this morning, haven’t you? M: No. That’s why I’m worried.

W: Why not try the 24-hour telephone weather forecast service? M: Great! How come I didn’t think of that? I’ll do it right away.

Text eight

W: Did I tell you that mom called last night? M: Oh, really? How is she?

W: Fine. In fact she is coming over on Sunday. She is really looking forward to seeing us. M: Aha…I’ve just remembered. I’m playing golf with Roy on Sunday all day. W: But I promised her you’d pick her up at the station. M: Well, you have to pick her up.

W: I can’t. My car is in the garage being fixed. You should have picked it up for me yesterday, remember?

M: Oh…yeah…Well, Why can’t she take a taxi?

W: No, She always gets lost and they drop her off at the wrong house. Anyway, she can’t possibly carry all those golf clubs by herself. M: Golf clubs? What golf clubs?

W: She thought you might like Dad’s golf clubs so she’s bringing them on Sunday. M: Of course I’ll pick her up.

Text 9

M: I saw the ― Two rooms to let‖ bill on the wall outside. Hope I’m coming to the right place.

W: Yes, you are. We do have two rooms for rent. You can use this one as bedroom, the other as sitting room. Or the other way around. You’re an office worker, aren’t you? M: You’re right. How much do they rent for, altogether? W: No hurry. Let’s talk about it later. Are you married? M: Yes.

W: How many children do you have? M: Not a single one.

W: Well, I would like someone like you to rent my rooms.

M: Really?... This room here looks to the north, with a view of the harbor. Not bad. But I am afraid it’s not big enough to be a sitting room. You know, my wife and I would rather have a better and more comfortable place to ―stand‖ and ―sit‖…

W: Why, if you know how to make use of it, there’s plenty of room here for you two. M: Perhaps you are right. Then rent—please? W: Three hundred dollars a month. How about it? M: You’ve got to come down a bit.

W: I can’t. Nowadays, the cost of living is high…All right, make it two hundred eighty. You may

move in any time. You haven’t got bits of heavy furniture to move, have you? M: No, except a heavy piano… W: What? You have a piano!

M: You see, my wife is a pianist while I am an amateur singer myself.

W: I see what you mean now—- your wife ―sits‖ and plays the piano while you ― stand‖ and sing. Well, in that case, I am afraid I can’t let you have the two rooms. We like to keep this house quiet… You see, I just can’t stand noise of any kind.

Text 10

You may learn more than you think by playing games.

Children don’t know it, but playing games helps them learn important social skills like taking turns. They also learn how to be a good winner or loser. Games also prepare children for school by helping them learn colors and shapes and to count and read. As they grow older, children play more important games. These games help them to reason better and develop their thinking skills. Playing cards helps teens gain self confidence and build relationships with kids of their own age. Playing sports games develops their bodies and teaches strategy.

Adults enjoy playing games to clear their minds and change their moods. Both the social interaction and the laughter that accompany playing games help to lower stress. When the elderly play games, their minds stay healthier and their memory improves.

Parents who play games with their kids build better relationships with them. Parents can also see how their children think and behave. It helps them get to know their child.

Whether you are young or old, playing games makes you smarter and puts fun into your life.
