Handles Franklin, who plays guard for the Harlem Globetrotters, is well-known for his amazing skills at handling a basketball.

Since joining the Globetrotters, Franklin explained that it has given him an appreciation for life and a desire to be the best person he can. The Globetrotters are more than a basketball team; they are a group of diverse individuals who are committed to making a difference in people?s lives.

Alzheimer?s disease is mostly a condition of old age. Since life expectancy is getting longer
around the world, the number of people affected by the brain disease is expected to increase greatly in some countries by the middle of the century. People with Alzheimer?s often have other medical needs that require the services of numerous health care professionals. The caregivers often have a hard time keeping up with all the medical information.
More and more family members are being called on to help care for loved ones with Alzheimer?s. It is a responsibility for which most people are unprepared. This is why the Hebrew Home, a private non-profit health care group in Riverdale, New York, developed an iPhone and iPad application called “Balance.” The app offers caregivers advice on recognizing symptoms and on feeding, bathing and providing a healthy environment for patients. It can be bought on the Internet for four dollars. David Pomeranz is Hebrew Home?s program development director, and he created “Balance.”
“It is not easy and we hope this will make it a little easier for people,” Mr Pomeranz says. “We are dealing with their family members because, as a philosophy, we feel that we need to care for the caregivers equally in our response to the care needs of the clients themselves, since if the caregivers do not have the proper supports, they simply cannot be caregivers.”
Mr Pomeranz says the “Balance” software is designed to let users organize medical and other information so they can easily keep track of the person?s health. It helps caregivers manage doctor?s appointments and share information with doctors about the patients? daily emotional changes.
Interest in the app is not limited to the United States. “It has been interesting to see that we have had apps purchased in countries from Egypt to the Netherlands to Greece. It is like the United Nations every day, to see where people are buying this.”

People feel that they have a right to throw away as much rubbish as they like. They shouldn?t. Rubbish damages the environment and is expensive to dispose of. With household waste, just as poisonous chemicals, governments need to persuade people that they should be responsible for the rubbish they produce.
Waste is also becoming more dangerous. Modern industry produces many things, from coal ash to computers, which are difficult to dispose of properly. The consequences can be serious: in the city
of Dzerzhinsk, in Russia, decades of careless handling of chemical waste has reduced male life expectancy to just 42 years. Rotting waste, meanwhile, produces methane, one of the greenhouse gases, and thus contributes to global warming.
Yet as the special report on the waste business in this week?s issue argues, there are grounds for optimism amid the mountains of rubbish. Environmental concerns have caused dramatic improvements in the way waste is managed in many countries. Recycling is becoming ever more common. Entrepreneurs are brimming with schemes to turn rubbish into electricity or fuel or fertilizer. Environmentalists dream of a world in which almost nothing is wasted.
But it is governments that have the power to turn such visions into reality, and their policies are all over the place. In America, for example, landfills containing household rubbish are subject to tight regulation, while ones filled with harmful sludge(沉淀物) form power plants are less tightly controlled. In Britain landfills are taxed out of the damage they do to the environment. In poor countries many governments often ignore waste altogether. Only 6% of Madagascar?s rubbish is even collected.
To clear up the mess, governments need to hold people and companies responsible for the waste they produce. One way is to work out the cost of disposal and charge firms and households for rubbish collection based on the volume they produce. That helps discourage people from throwing the stuff out, and provides a tax stream to dispose of it when they do. Another is to make laws to push manufacturers to take back and dispose of certain goods when consumers have finished with them. That gives firms a motivation to make their goods easy to recycle or reuse.
