The everyday signs of conscientiousness (认真尽责) ——being punctual, careful in doing work, self-disciplined, and scrupulous (一丝不苟的) in attending to responsibilities ——are typical characteristics of the model organizational citizen, the people who keep things running as they should. They follow the rules, help out, and are concerned about the people they work with. It’s the conscientious worker who helps newcomers or updates people who return after an absence, who never abuses sick leaves, who always gets things done on deadline.
Conscientiousness is a key to success in any field. In studies of job performance, outstanding effectiveness for almost all jobs, from semi-skilled labor to sales and management, depends on conscientiousness. It is particularly important for outstanding performance in jobs at the lower levels of an organization: the secretary whose message taking is perfect, the delivery truck driver who is always on time. Conscientiousness also offers a buffer (缓冲) against the threat of job loss in today’s constantly changing market, because employees with this quality are among the most valued. But conscientiousness in the absence of social skills can lead to problems. Since conscientious people demand so much of themselves, they can hold other people to their own standards, and so be overly judgmental when others don’t show the same high levels of model behavior. Factory workers in Great Britain and the United States who were extremely conscientious, for example, tended to criticize co-workers even about failures that seemed unimportant to those they criticized, which damaged their relationships.
When conscientiousness takes the form of living up to expectations, it can discourage creativity. In creative professions like art or advertising, openness to wild ideas and spontaneity (自发性) are scarce and in demand. Success in such occupations calls for a balance, however; without enough conscientiousness to follow through, people become mere dreamers, with nothing to show for their imaginativeness.

W: It’s such a nice day today. Why wasn’t it like this on Saturday for the bike trip? M: Well, I know it was windy but at least it didn’t rain. You still had great fun. Text 2
W: I’m hungry. Let’s go for lunch. How about the newly-opened Korean restaurant down the street?
M: I’m more in the mood for some Chinese food. Let’s go to Chan’s Take-Out. W: Why not? Text 3
W: I’m surprised to hear that John was fired.
M: I’m not. He’s such an unbearable chimney in his office. Those nonsmokers really can’t avoid second-hand smoke when he is in. Text 4
M: I promised George I’d meet him after class, but I forgot that I would be seeing my professor about my mid-term paper at the same time. W: I have George’s cell phone number. Text 5
M: Hello, is that the Castle Café? I think I left my camera on the table by the window on Tuesday afternoon. Did you find it, please?
W: Yes. We found the camera on the table. Come and collect it whenever it is convenient. Text 6
M: Would you take a look at this for me, dear? I have to make my research paper shorter, but I don’t know which parts to cut out. I just can’t decide. Maybe you can give me a fresh opinion. W: Sure, I’ll do that. Let me see…
M: Take your time. I needn’t hand it in until next Monday. But if you can look it over by Friday, I’ll have the whole weekend to work on it.
W: I can finish it by then. On Thursday, I only have a few short meetings. I should have plenty of
time to help you out.
M: It’s pretty long, as you can see…55 pages.
W: I’ll be able to do it. I’ll just sit down at the Black Point Café all afternoon! Text 7
W: Professor Wilson, can I ask you something? M: Sure.
W: What I’d like to do for my survey project is to interview three people. Would that be OK? Because in class you said a survey is usually done with a large number of people. M: That’s right, it is. But tell me about your idea.
W: My idea is to interview three people in my host family. There’s a grandmother who has a lot of opinions—oh, about life. I want to compare what she says with what the mother and the daughter say. Would that be all right?
M: It’s a start. Why don’t you prepare a list of questions—maybe five, six—no more than ten, for your interviews? When you’ve done that, show me the list, and we’ll go from there. W: All right. I’ll work on it tonight. Thanks for the advice. M: You’re welcome. Text 8
M: We seem to be having this conversation over and over again. W: You’re right.
M: Look, I know how you feel about my smoking. You don’t have to tell me every day. W: Sorry. I worry about you.
M: I know. But work and school have me so stressed out. Maybe I’ll be able to quit after I graduate.
W: Let’s be honest. There’s always going to be a reason not to. After you graduate, it’s going to be hard to find a job, then there will be the stress from just starting a job, then there will be … M: OK, I get your point. It’s just so hard. You don’t really understand because you never smoked. W: You need some help. Why don’t you go to a doctor? Maybe you can get some pills.
M: Really, I believe I can quit on my own. Just not right now. But I’ll think about what you said. I will.
W: All right. I won’t mention it for a week. Then I want to know your decision. Text 9
W: Boy, it really wears me out. I didn’t know that cross-country skiing could be such hard work.
M: Yeah, but just think of how much exercise you’re getting. And with cross-country skiing you don’t have to fight the crowds. That’s why I like it. I hate fighting the crowds and waiting for
