W: Excuse me, sir. I wonder if you could spare me just five minutes of your time. I’m doing some market research for a fast food company. I wonder if you could possibly manage to answer just five simple questions.

M: Well, is it real market research or are you going to sell me something? W: No, I’m not going to sell you anything. Five simple questions. M: Five minutes.

W: Oh, that’s good. Um, firstly, do you ever eat fast food? M: Yes, yes, I do.

W: What kind of food do you often eat?

M: Oh, er, you know---burgers, sandwiches, well, sometimes pizzas.

W: Oh, right. And how often do you eat fast food? Every day, more than once a week or less than once a week?

M: Er, well. Monday to Friday when I’m working; er, yeah, every day, um, but not usually at the weekends.

W: And what time of day do you eat fast food?

M: Well, at work, as I said. You know, at lunch time. W: Oh, right. Do you only eat it as a main meal? M: Yes. Only as a main meal. You know, lunch. W: Thank you very much, sir. Good-bye! M: Good-bye!

Now, before we start our first lab, I’d like to tell you a little bit about the workbook you will be using. It is a big book. What you should do is choose the activities you want to do. Part of my job is to help you make your choices.

Next, I’d like to say that in each lesson, there are usually two parts. The first is called “Experiments” and the second is called “Activities.”

In the “Experiments” part, the book gives full instructions for all the experiments, including other steps you may take. Choose the steps you wish as there’s plenty of equipment in the lab.

In the “Activities” part, you’ll find activities you can do in your time. No instructions are given in this part, and you should do them your own way. If there are no questions, let’s turn to Lesson One now.
