The guided walks and tours for families in the UK
To avoid complaints about “walking’s boring”, you can try a children-focused tour, where guides lead you around the Robin Hood and Fossil hunting, or Wander with Romans.
Robin Hood, Nottingham
The legend of Nottingham county’s famous criminal is brought to life on this entertaining tour. In feathered cap and leather jacket, Ezekiel Bone plays the role, leading visitors around the key sights in Nottingham, including the castle, Lace Market and Old County Prison. An attempt into underground caves and St Mary’s churchyard add an enjoyable scare for children.
● Tours run most Saturdays from March to October and on other dates throughout the year. Recommended for children over 10, 2.5 hours. Adults£12, under 14s£7.
Fossil hunting, Isle of Wight
Martin Simpson, known locally as “the Fossil Man”, runs the fossil shop at God shill on the Isle of Wight. He’s written several children books on fossils and shares his knowledge on fossil-hunting trips on beaches in the southwest of the island. Families are shown where to look for fossils and can keep what they find. The two-hour trips are suitable for all ages and no tools are required.
● Some trips are led by Martin and some by head guide Felicity. Adults£4, children£3.
Wander with Romans, Northumberland
Nothing replaces a history lesson quite like a field trip---especially if it’s guided by your own Roman. Kevin in Robson, his two-hour Wander with Romans, give families an insight into life in Roman Britain, the cultural beliefs of the time and the building of the wall itself. The tours start at Caw fields, where there is a well-preserved stretch of wall, the remains of a mile castle and wonderful views across the deserts. The interactive tours are led by a costumed guide---often Kevin, but sometimes another member of the team.
● Adults£20, 5-15£3, under 5s free.

Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. One night I went to pick up a passenger at 2:30 AM. When I arrived to collect, I found the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window.
I walked to the door and knocked, “Just a minute ”, answered a weak, elderly voice.
After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her eighties stood before me. By her side was a small suitcase. I took the suitcase to the car, and then returned to help the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the car. She kept thanking me for my kindness. “It’s nothing,” I told her. “I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated.”
“Oh, you’re such a good man.” She said. When we got into the taxi, she gave me an address, and then asked, “Could you drive through downtown?” “It’s not the shortest way,” I answered quickly.
“Oh, I’m in no hurry,” she said. “I’m on my way to a hospice(临终医院). I don’t have any family left. The doctor says I don’t have very long.” I quietly reached over and shut off the meter(计价器).
For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked, the neighborhood where she had lived, and the furniture shop that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.
Sometimes she’d ask me to slow down in front of a particular building and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.
At dawn, she suddenly said,” I’m tired. Let’s go now.” We drove in silence to the address she had given me.
“How much do I owe you?” she asked. “Nothing.” I said.
“You have to make a living,” she answered. “Oh, there are other passengers,” I answered.
Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held into me tightly. Our hug ended with her remark, “You gave an old woman a little moment of joy.” 5. The old woman chose to ride through the city in order to ______.

Most people forget what they’ve just learned within 12 or 24 hours. If you are reading this post now, chances are that tomorrow you'll not even remember it. Our brain works like a big search engine. When you insert a new piece of information, it goes to a big stack called short-term memory. When you want to remember that information, your brain will try to search inside that stack for the information you requested. That's why you often remember a title of a song after many hours from your first attempt.
If you are trying to recall something after a long time (it can be even one hour for useless information), your brain will have a hard time finding it, as it's more likely that you have forgotten it. Knowing this, we can try to understand why we forget what we’ve learned just a few hours ago. When a new piece of information enters your brain, it is stored as unstable information, because your brain doesn't know whether it's useful or not. For example, you don't need to remember every car you've seen in your daily commute(通勤) to work.
But what happens when you try to recall something you’ve previously learned? Most times you simply can’t. If I would tell you now to find the sum of the number from 1 to n, you have to calculate (n+1)× n/2, chances are that within one hour it’ll be already hard for you to recall the correct formula (公式), although it's pretty easy. This happens because (if you are not good at math) your brain does not find similar information already stored in your brain, so it's hard for it to strengthen that information alone. And by now you've probably forgotten it. As you've just read, the major difficulty for your brain is to strengthen and create consistency and the best way to help your brain do it is by recalling what you've just learned many times. 8. Why do most people forget what they have just learned in one day?
A. Because short-term memory plays the main role in remembering newly learned thing B. Because long-term memory plays the main role in remembering newly learned things C. Because most people are not clever enough to learn new things D. Because long-term memory is hard to achieve
9. We can learn from the text that we may forget the useless information___________. A. at least 24 hours later B. at least 12 hours later C. at least six hours later D. about one hour later 10. When you try to remember the things you’ve previously learned, you can_________ . A. simply recall all of them easily B. hardly remember them most times C. recall none of them D. recall a few of them
11. If you want to remember what you have learned, you'd better___________ .
- 3 -
A. review them as often as possible B. be good at math and thinking C. store as much knowledge as possible D. strengthen them right away

Store Scent (香味)
What is the first thing you notice when you walk into a shop? The products displayed at the entrance? Or the soft background music?
But have you ever notice the smell? Unless it is bad, the answer is likely to be no. But while a shop’s scent may not be outstanding compared with sights and sounds, it is certainly there. And it is providing to be an increasing powerful tool in encouraging people to purchase.
A brand store has become famous for its distinctive scent which floats through the fairly dark hall and out to the entrance, via scent machines. A smell may be attractive but it may not just be used for freshening air. One sports goods company once reported that when it first introduced scent into its stores, customers’ intention to purchase increased by 80 percent.
When it comes to the best shopping streets in Pairs, scent is just as important to a brand’s success as the quality of its window displays and goods on sales. That is mainly because shopping is a very different experience to what it used to be.
Some years ago, the focus for brand name shopping was on a few people with sales assistants’ disproving attitude and don’t-touch-what-you-can’t-afford displays. Now the rise of electronic commerce (e-commerce电子商务) has opened up famous brands to a wider audience. But while e-shops can use sights and sounds, only bricks-and-mortar stores (实体店) can offer a full experience from the minute customers step through the door to the moment they leave. Another brand store seeks to be much more than a shop, but rather a destination. And scent is just one way to achieve this.
Now a famous store uses complex man-made smell to make sure that the soft scent of baby powder floats through the kid department, and coconut (椰子) scent in the swimsuit section. A department store has even opened a new lab, inviting customers on a journey into the store’s windows to smell books, pots and drawers, in search of their perfect scent.
12. According to the passage, what is an increasingly powerful tool in the success of some brand stores?
A.Friendly assistants. B.Unique scents.
C.Soft background music. D.Attractive window display. 13. E-shops are mentioned in the passage to _______ . A.show the advantages of brick-and-mortar stores B.urge shop assistants to change their attitude C.push stores to use sights and sounds D.introduce the rise of e-commerce
14. The underlined word “destination” in Paragraph 5 means _______ . A.a platform that exhibits goods
B.a spot where travelers like to stay C.a place where customers love to go
