Section 3: Sentence Patterns – Grammar Students should be able to make sentences that follow the patterns below: I like [ ] I like pizza. I like to [ ] I like to play basketball. They are animals. Use of possessive pronouns: my, our, your, his, her, their Formation of Sentences In general, students should be able to form grammatically correct sentences. A good test would be to look at the \student can answer with grammatically correct sentences. Tenses: Past Present Future Yesterday, I…. I am …. Tomorrow, I will . . . John is the tallest student. Positional Prepositions Use of: in, on, under, over, above, next to, against, across from, in front of, behind, beside, on top of, The pen is on the desk. The pen is on top of the desk. The school is across from the park. The snake is behind the tree. Students should have practice repeating sentences. When repeating sentences, students should not drop words or change words. For example: Teacher says: “My father goes to work but I go to school”. Student should be able to repeat the sentence word for word. Sample response: My father goes to work but I go school. [Incorrect response - left out “to”] My father goes to work but I go to school. My baby brother is very young. A mouse is little but an elephant is big. He is going to the store to buy milk. The elephant eats grass but the alligator eats fish. Johnny is here, but Mary is not here A cat likes fish, but a rabbit likes carrots The girls are running very fast She didn't go to school on Monday My mother doesn't like to eat bananas I eat breakfast everyday. I use my umbrella on rainy days. He roller-skates to school everyday. I went to the shop yesterday with my Dad The firefighter is going to the fire in the big red truck. The dentist told me to brush my teeth everyday. My father is the biggest and I am the smallest If I eat all my vegetables my mother will be happy. End of Section 3
