(2017·浙江五校联考)

Imagine this: You're at the movies seeing the latest box-office hit.The leading actor chases down(找到) the film's bad guy before winning over the beautiful leading lady. What does he do next? He sucks on a cigarette.

What's wrong with this picture? Doesn't the beautiful woman see her hero's yellow teeth? Doesn't she smell his smoky breath? And wouldn' t the good guy have trouble chasing, since smoking causes a person to cough?

But you don't see any of that when someone smokes cigarettes in the movies. And there is a lot of smoking in movies, actors light up in more than 50 percent of youth-rated (G,PG,PG-13) movies, according to the American Legacy Foundation, which aims to put an end to smoking among young people. That means that Hollywood is showing 14 billion images of smoking to young people every year.

All that exposure to on-screen smoking can influence teens to smoke. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) argues that 44 percent of teens who begin smoking do so because they' ve seen smoking in movies. The CDC reports that teens are two to three times more likely to start smoking after seeing repeated smoking scenes in movies than teens who are lightly exposed to smoking in movies.

Several organizations are working to remove smoking in youth-rated movies. And adults are not the only ones who care about this issue. Many teens are actively involved.Livia Clandorf,16,of Chatham,New York,is a member of Reality Check,an organization that educates teens about what it considers to be the manipulative (巧妙处理的) practices of tobacco companies.Livia participated in an event called a“movie stomp (跺脚)”. Reality Check rents out a movie theater and screens a youth-rated film that shows smoking.Every time audience members see smoking, they stomp their feet and show disapproval by shouting“boo”.

【语篇解读】 本文是说明文。据调查,电影中大量的抽烟镜头正诱使越来越多的青少年开始抽烟。

1.What is the picture you are asked to imagine like according to the author?

A.It' s touching. C.It' s frightening.

B.It' s beautiful. D.It' s unreasonable.

D [考查推理判断。由第二段中一连串的问句及第三段开头的But you don't see any of that when someone smokes cigarettes in the movies可推断,作者认为这种电影情节忽略了抽烟的坏处,与现实不符,是极不合理的。]

2.What does the underlined part“light up”in Paragraph 3 mean?

A.Guide with a light. B.Begin to smoke. C.Show pleasure.

D.Provide light.

B [考查词义猜测。由上文的there is a lot of smoking in movies及下文的showing 14 billion images of smoking可推断,划线短语所在部分的意思是“一半以上的青少年电影中男演员会点火抽烟”。故划线部分的意思是“开始抽烟”。] 3.What can be inferred from the CDC' s words?

A.Over 50 percent of teens smoke. B.Teens should watch more movies. C.Many movies cause teens to smoke. D.Teens are less likely to smoke than adults.

C [考查推理判断。由第四段中的44 percent of teens who begin smoking do so because they've seen smoking in movies及The CDC reports that...lightly exposed to smoking in movies可推断,很多电影中的抽烟情节使青少年逐渐加入烟民的行列。]

(2017·浙江嘉兴一中模拟)

I was driving past our town park the Saturday before Easter last year and noticed a large group of adults putting thousands of plastic eggs around the park in preparation for an Easter egg hunt. The eggs were in plain sight, consistent with the current thinking that no child should be expected to work up a sweat. The children were lined up behind a rope, the smallest in front,to get first crack at the eggs, applying a standard of fairness that exists nowhere in the world that I know of.

When I was a kid,the town kept its nose out of the Easter egg business. The day before Easter,my mother went to Johnston' s IGA (a grocery store) and bought three dozen eggs, vinegar, and food coloring. While she was boiling the eggs,we poured hot water, vinegar, and food coloring in coffee

cups, and spread the Saturday morning Indianapolis Star on the kitchen table. Then,we dipped the eggs in the cups.

My oldest brother,Glenn, hid the eggs in roof gutters (水槽) 30 feet above the ground, buried them in the center of thorn bushes, beneath foundation stones and in snake holes, any place that could result in our death or disfigurement while hunting for them.It took us weeks to find them, and some we never did discover would work their way to the Earth' s surface the next winter.

Usually, one of us found way more eggs than the other four of us — usually Glenn, since he had hidden them in the first place.Complaining was useless, since our parents wouldn't have done anything about it except to tell us to stop complaining. It would never have occurred to them to place the eggs in plain sight,or to take us by the hand and guide us from egg to egg,or to urge the bigger children to leave some eggs for the smaller children.

Will the kids in our town have such fun if we keep coddling (娇养) them?

【语篇解读】 本文是夹叙夹议文。作者回忆了儿时复活节寻蛋活动,有趣味、有挑战,参与的孩子乐在其中。反观现在的寻蛋活动,着实让人失望。 4.What did the author think of the Easter egg hunt he saw in the park?

A.It was unfair. C.It was boring.

B.It was tiring. D.It was challenging.

C [考查观点态度。根据第一段中的in plain sight, consistent with the current thinking that no child should be expected to work up a sweat和applying a standard of fairness that exists nowhere in the world that I know of可知,作者看到彩蛋放置得过于明显、小孩子被排在前列,而这样的做法会使得寻蛋活动毫不费力,且看上去的“公正”现实生活中也见不到,所以他会觉得这个活动很无趣。]

5.What were the places where the author' s brother hid the eggs like?

A.Dirty. C.Faraway.

B.Readily available. D.Hardly noticeable.

D [考查细节理解。根据第三段中的roof gutters(水槽) 30 feet above the ground, thorn bushes, snake holes和result in our death or disfigurement可知,作者小的时候,每逢复活节寻蛋活动,哥哥都会把彩蛋藏在隐秘危险的地方,寻蛋的难度很大。] 6.How did the author's parents deal with their complaining?

A.They treated it fairly. B.They took it seriously. C.They played no part in it.

D.They punished the complainer.

C [考查推理判断。根据倒数第二段中的Complaining was useless, since our parents wouldn't have done anything about it except to tell us to stop complaining可知,抱怨没用,因为父母对抱怨置之不理,不采取任何措施,最多只会让抱怨者停止抱怨。]

Blue whales are the largest animals ever known to have existed on the planet, and they can grow to a length of 100 feet and weigh more than 330,000 pounds. But recently researchers have found that these whales are on the move and they have migrated from California waters to areas off Canada and Alaska for the first time since commercial whaling ended in 1965.

The researchers identified 15 blue whales that have appeared off the coast of British Columbia and the Gulf of Alaska since 1997.Four of these whales were recognized as ones that were once sighted off California shores, suggesting that the whales are returning to an old migration pattern between the coasts.

Before commercial whaling began in the early 1900s,blue whales were found widely throughout the North Pacific and California waters. But from the 1920s to the 1960s,whaling severely reduced the whale populations.Blue whales never recovered in the North Pacific, making sightings in this area rare. However, much larger groups of whales have been observed close to California since the 1970s.

The scientists had previously thought that the California population was separate from the population that had historically lived in the North Pacific waters. But the current study shows that whales off the coast of British Columbia and the Gulf of Alaska are likely part of the California population.

To identify the blue whales, the researchers looked at photos of cetaceans taken in the North Pacific Ocean and compared them with a library of blue whale pictures taken along the west coast of the United States and Southern Pacific.Up to now,the researchers are not quite sure why the whales are changing their migration patterns, but they suspect that the whales may be following their food moving farther north by the changes in ocean conditions.

【语篇解读】 本文主要讲的是蓝鲸的迁移以及有可能引起迁移的原因。 7.According to the passage,blue whales are .

A.following a fixed route of migration B.dying out due to commercial whaling C.moving from the south to the north D.rarely found in the Southern Pacific
