Good morning, Ladies and gentleman, welcome to Shunan Bamboo Forest.

The beautiful Bamboo Forest is located in the south part of Sichuan province. It’s

absolutely a green kingdom. You see, its 27 ridges and 500 hills are all covered by green bamboo. Here we can find 58 species of bamboo trees, such as flower bamboo , abacus

bamboo, cotton bamboo, Xiangfei bamboo, just to mention a few. Besides, the area also has many historic and cultural relics. Let’s say Longyin Temple, Tianbao Village etc .So it’s no doubt a popular tourist resorts in China.

Ladies and gentleman, Now we are in the Carefree Valley, On the the right side. You can see seven statues of ancient people in the bamboo grove . Some are drinking wine, some are playing the musical instruments and some are singing. Here, you must want to know; Who are they? And do they have something to do with the bamboo?

Ok, let me tell you, they are called Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove. And in the Chinese history, they had a close relation with the bamboo.

That was seventeen hundred years ago, In the Wei and Jin Dynasties, the political

struggle was heated , many people were involved in the politics and were killed. The seven sages were very unsatisfied with the government , so they chose to stay away from the outside world and live in a secluded bamboo grove. They often gathered together,

drinking wine, painting or writing poems,. Because there were no worldly affairs to trouble them, they could fully enjoy the beauty of nature, art and life.

Everybody, now you have known who they are and why they love bamboo so much, next I want to tell you something more about bamboo, because it’s an important part of Chinese culture.

Actually, Chinese people think that bamboo is the symbol of noble character. It usually grown in wild, it’s tall, straight and with hollow heart, so it often stands for the character of uprightness, integrity and modesty. In Chinese history, lots of literary scholars, artists, poets praised bamboo through their paintings, poems and other works.

Everybody, have you ever noticed that there are usually some green bamboo around people’s house? Except the practical factors, the major reason is people like to plant bamboo in the backyards to show their cultural taste. One of the most great scholars in Chinese

history, Su Dongpo once said \without bamboos around\

Here’s another thing I want to mention, that is in China bamboo also has some gracious nicknames. Let’s say, bamboo are often associated with plum blossoms, orchids and

chrysanthemums. They are called Four Gentlemen of the Flowers. Because in ancient China, people called a man of great virtue a gentleman. Bamboo’s another nickname is “Three Friends in the Winter\resist cold weather in winter.
