Roberto Clemente is the greatest baseball player of all time. He had an unbelievable batting average (击球率) in all seasons he played. Having won four batting titles, Gold Glove Awards twelve times, and a Most Valuable Player Award, he is certainly the best that ever played.

Besides being the best baseball player, Roberto Clemente was also a great man and a hero. In 1972, there was an earthquake in Nicaragua. On December 31 of that year, Clemente flew to Nicaragua to take supplies to the people. Almost immediately after takeoff, the plane crashed into the Caribbean Sea.

The best honors for Clemente came after he died. He was the first Latino voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. In 1999, the city of Pittsburgh, where he played baseball, renamed a bridge after him — a bridge that leads to the city’s beautiful new stadium.

No one summed up the life of Roberto Clemente and the baseball commissioner (总干事) when, at Clemente’s Hall of Fame award ceremony, he said, “He was so great a man, as a leader and

humanitarian, so great an inspiration to the young and to all in baseball, especially to the proud people of his homeland, Puerto Rico. ” The commissioner further honored Clemente by creating a sportsmanship award in his name.

“Excuse me, I just want to take another cookie. . . ” The slim man reached over my shoulder to grab a chocolate cookie. “They are delicious, ” he said. “I’m eating my fourth, ” he added, as he put it into his mouth.

We were at a neighborhood social gathering. “Are you a runner? ”I asked, thinking someone who is thin and eats so many cookies must be a devoted exerciser.

“Oh, yes. I run marathons and train all year round, ” he replied. “My running group meets at 6 am every morning all year round, unless there is a snowstorm or too much ice to run safely. ”

My neighbors listening to this conversation nodded in understanding, but moved away from the tray(托盘)of desserts. None of us trained for anything, and our gym workouts were at most two hours long. . . but usually much shorter. No cookies for us. Of course, we exercise as a way to keep healthy, but we also view it as a defense against weight gain. My neighbors, including me, believe eating high-calorie food would damage the effects of sweating on the treadmill(跑步机) or exercise bike. “Maybe I should run a marathon, ” a friend whispered, looking yearningly at the cookies.

Actually, giving people treats to motivate(激发) behavior is something we do with children. Announcing that desserts will be served probably gets people who otherwise might stay home to attend a lecture or meeting. So what if we tell the individual that he can enjoy a treat without a warning if he exercises for an hour, instead of telling him that eating an ice cream will make him work on a treadmill for an hour to burn off the calories?
