Cover letter 附信

Do not overwhelm the reader with narrow margins - a way for applicants to introduce themselves and explain their suitability for the desired position

- a way for employers to screen out applicants who are not sufficiently interested in the position or who lack necessary basic skills

CV (curriculum vitae):a brief account of a person's education, qualifications, and previous experience, typically sent with a job application 适用于应届毕业生

resume:a curriculum vitae 侧重先前的经验

如何写好简历:

1) From the recruiters' perspective 2) How to catch the recruiters' eyes?

Use good and simple template

Most significant accomplishment comes first make sure they can read your most

significant accomplishment before they get bored.

Bold font when necessary, but not too much.

Bold font for some real-killer accomplishment / data. Never more than three.

Limit the general information.

Do not use up one-third of your page for your personal information.

Limit your resume to one page Make sure the font is easy to read

3) What are recruiters looking for in a resume? (in general)

Use action verbs and description should be positive e.g.

manage, construct, analyze is more effective than management, and analysis, because you want to express that you actually did these things.

Highlight your most relevant experiences and skills Customizing your resume for different positions

Situation

? Describe the situation that you are in — what is the problem that you've been given to solve? Task

? Describe the tasks that were given to you

to complete the project. Action ? Describe the actions that you

took to complete the project. Result ? Describe the results of your action — what was accomplished

? If possible, quantify the results references available upon request 若有需要,就附上推荐信

《1.2 Asking and answering questions》的笔记:

词汇:

nitial:adj. 最初的 initiate:v. 发起

initiative:n. 首次提出的想法或建议 be ordered to make for port:被要求靠岸 sea-worthiness:(船舶的)适航性

A ship that is seaworthy is in a suitable condition to sail. well-maintained:维护良好的

in excellent working order:工作井然有序 experienced crew:有经验的船员 hostile:

used to describe conditions that are difficult to live in, or that make it difficult to achieve sth.

e.g. hostile environment / climate / terrain subside:

if bad weather conditions subside, they gradually return to a normal state e.g. The wind gradually subsided, and all was quiet.

sub-:below / under subsidiary:子公司

subordinate:下属,下级

mount an operation

mount:to plan, organize, and begin an event or a course of action

put into perspective:

a sensible way of judging and comparing situations so that you do not imagine that something is more serious than it really is 换个角度思考

publicity:

the attention that someone or something gets from newspapers, television etc.

e.g. Standards in education have received much publicity over the last few years.

bad / good / unwelcome publicity

在英语中,飞机船只等都被用女性的代词指代。

qualification:

a quality or accomplishment that makes someone suitable for a particular job or activity 证书,泛指的证书全程

certificate:an official document attesting a certain fact in particular针对于某一个专业项目的资格证书

straightforward questions 直接类问题

approach:v. deal with 处理

anecdote:实例,奇闻轶事

handle tricky situations and relationships:处理棘手的情况和关系
