BOOKS| ABOUT BOOKS

By David Hugh Smith|APRIL 5,2017 As a little girt,Beatrix Potter loved the country and loved animals. So she brought many different creatures-rabbits,mice,even lizards-into her tiny world.

As she grew older,Beatrix got better and better at drawing animals and nature. Then she started adding stories to her illustrations, making them into books.

British author Matthew Dennison is the latest until last year to turn the story of Beatrix Potter herself into a book:Over the Hills and Far Away:The Life of Beatrix Potter.Indeed,Ms.Potter's extraordinary life makes for all absorbing tale.

Nearly 75 years after her passing, she still is one of the most famous children's writers in the world.Millions of copies of her 23 books have been sold-in many languages.Potter won her popularity by involving readers in the dilemmas of her characters using simple, almost poetic words.

Dennison's text is filled with telling observations. He skillfully weaves Potter's stories into his description. But Dennison could have benefitted from following Potter's example of

straightforward storytelling. His description is non-linear(非线性的).This can prevent the reader from understanding Potter's life.

Dennison, however, repairs this with earnest descriptions, including his beautifully

affectionate descriptions about Potter's life.At the end he describes the view today from the sitting room of her Hill Top home, now a museum in Cumbria County,in a way Potter would have loved:It stretches…past stone cottages and snaking lanes to…the blue slopes of

mountains and the distant glimmer of sunlight on lake water, over the hills and far away.\1. What can we learn about Over the Hills and Far Away:The Life of Beatrix Potter?

A couple of months ago,we were in a hurry to get somewhere, when our 6-year-old daughter was just to slow things down.In response I became impatient and unkind. As I unloaded my apology, she said,\,it's OK.You've never been a mom before. This is your first time. You're just trying. It's OK.\ Her response humbledme. She had been able to give me what I had refused to give (使…卑微)

her just moments before--mercy,understanding and sympathy. And I needed it.We all do.Actually, there may be nothing more needed today in our nation and communities. It's no wonder former Baptist Church member Megan has transformed her idea.Megan spent 20 years representing her church's beliefs with messages of hate towards gays,Jews and those who support abortion. When she finally started civil dialog with her\,she

found\…\,she left the faith of her family. What surprised her most was the forgiveness and understanding she experienced from her former\.

Her lessons are what we all need.As she accurately describes about our cultural climate,\have grown more and more divided and have broken the world into‘us'and‘them'\.But this will\.instead,she concludes\people we disagree with\.

My experience with my daughter teaches me that the ability to engage with\,to avoid tough judgments, and to show sympathy is learned first, and practiced best,at

home.Researchers believe the key to developing those abilities in our children lies in how we respond to their feelings, especially the negative ones.

We will have made efforts to create a world where we are all better able to take the perspective of others, stay away from tough judgments and recognize and respect the humanity in the souls around us.This desire makes my own struggling to be better every day worth all the effort. 4. 3. D.推理判断题.根据第五段第一句

\,to avoid tough judgments, and to show sympathy is learned first, and practiced best,at home.\以及最后一段第一句中的

Dear Mr.Shyamalan,

According to the box office, congratulations are in order. It seems your new movie,Split,is doing gangbusters. That means millions of people all over the world have seen or will soon

第3页,共12页

see your story about a man who is suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder(DID). As much as I'm rooting for you as an artist,Mr.Shyamalan, personally,I think you climbed to success on the overburdened backs of the mentally ill.

As a person who suffers from multiple(多面的)personalities,as well as a psychologist with professional knowledge and skills in the subject,I feel it is my duty to school you in a few facts:People who suffer from DID are not, generally speaking, scary or cheating. We are normal people who silently suffer from a painful condition in which our sense of who we are feels divided into broken parts. Our condition is often caused by a history of severe and repeated child abuse. In truth,we are victims of unimaginable violence.

With the release of your movie, you have become my bully(恃强凌弱者).I am personally harmed by the absurd fixed image you use in split.Your description of Kevin Crumb as one gender confused,cross-dressing multiple with liking for violence has the same effect as shouting across the playground,\

I have lived for years with the shame created by movies such as yours.Despite being a successful doctor who runs a charity for adult survivors of child abuse,I live with constant anxiety that people will learn of my diagnosis(诊断).For no matter how long I've known someone or how highly they think of me,once they know I'm a multiple, the reaction is imaginable.

In the future,I'd appreciate it if you stopped using our pain and suffering as materials for your entertainment. Michelle Stevens

8. What does the author think of Shyamalan's success? ______

10. Who is Kevin Crumb according to the text? ______

A. A friend of Mr.Shyamalan's. B. A character in Split.

C. A patient of Michelle Stevens's.

D. A psychologist with multiple personalities.

11. What's the author's purpose in writing the text? ______

A. To give the movie Split a review. B. To show respect for people with DID.

C. To state that the movie Split hurt people with DI

D. D.To argue that people with DID can also make a difference. 【答案】 【小题1】D
