第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A

I have a fear of the dark. When I am out camping with my friends, I can hardly sleep because I’m so freaked out. What can I do? — Jack

Oh man, I was the same way when I was a kid! As I got older, I got over it, but if you aren’t there yet, try these tips. Firstly, try to think about what frightens you, and try to reason with yourself. Then think about pleasant things before you go to bed. Besides, you could keep a small flashlight (手电筒) close to you, and put your sleeping bag over it so it gives off a weak light. — Steve

Keeping a flashlight nearby is a great idea. I like to read before going to bed to help clear my mind of worries. Just avoid reading anything that’s frightening! — Jenny

Some of my friends make fun of me because I’m terrified of heights. What can I do to get over this fear? — Jane

For this question, I introduce a method called “flooding”, by which you face your fear head on. In your mind, imagine going to the top of a building, starting on the lowest floor and making it up to higher floors, one at a time. By the time you get to the top floor, you should feel relaxed! This will help you get over your fear of heights. — Steve

I completely understand; heights aren’t my friend either. And we’re not alone. It’s very common. What has helped me is to take a few deep breaths. It immediately relaxes me.

— Jenny

Only humans speak using words. But all animals can communicate in one way or another. Maybe you have heard about the way bees dance around to send messages to each other and the way dogs bark in different ways to give warnings.

But did you know about infrasonic (次声的) communication? This is how it works: Humans hear low sounds like thunder rumbling (雷声轰鸣) in the sky. But we don’t hear sounds lower than these. However, elephants can hear much lower sounds, and they use them to communicate with each other. This is known as infrasound.

Another amazing thing about infrasound is that it travels over several kilometres. Sounds which have a higher pitch (音调), like the ones people can hear, don’t travel well through walls, leaves, trees, and so on, which is why we can’t hear sounds from more than

100 metres away. But infrasound is much ‘stronger’, and things like grass and trees have no effect on it. Therefore it can travel much further. Elephants can hear infrasonic calls from four kilometres away!

There have been reports of people watching elephants feeding or resting and then the elephants suddenly all ran away for no reason at all. They obviously heard a warning call from a long way away, but the people didn’t hear a sound. In places like a zoo or wildlife park where you can get nearer to animals, it is a bit easier to sense when infrasonic sounds are made. When you stand near mother elephants with their babies in a zoo you may notice a weak rumbling in the air every few minutes — not loud or strong, but clearly noticeable. This is infrasonic communication — the mother elephants ‘talking’ to their babies!

25. Why does the author mention bees and dogs in Paragraph 1? A. To show humans are special. B. To introduce animal communication. C. To compare different kinds of animals. D. To tell us an interesting story about animals. 26. We can learn from the text that infrasound _____. A. belongs to high sounds B. can travel long distances

C. is higher than the sound of thunder D. gets weaker when traveling through walls

27. What can we infer from the reports in the last paragraph? A. The people watching also heard the warning call. B. Humans can hear lower sounds than elephants can. C. The elephants were frightened by the people close
