12 Last year, Claire Noble-Randall woke up at 5:30 am every morning. She had to catch two buses to arrive in time for first-period chemistry at Ingraham High School in Seattle,US.

Ingraham starts at 8 am, but Noble-Randall often didn’t get to sleep until after midnight. “It was really hard not to fall asleep in class,” she said.

Her mom solved the problem this year when she discovered that other parents had hired a private city tour bus to take their children to the school.

“Now, she leaves the house at a much more reasonable time 7:10 in the morning ... to catch the little tour bus at 7:23 am,” said her mother, Noelle Noble.

That may be one way to help students get more sleep. But more than 3,300 people have signed an online petition (请愿) looking for a better solution from the Seattle school district. Those who have signed the petition want all high schools and middle schools to start no earlier than 8:30 am. Most of Seattle’s high schools and middle schools start at 8 am or earlier.

Later start times for teenagers is an idea that some parents around the nation have wanted for years. They’ve provided plenty of scientific evidence that teenagers tend to be night owls and delayed start times improve their health, mood, attention, and, in some cases, learning.

But attempts to delay start times for teenagers haven’t worked. Coaches don’t want late dismissals (放学) cutting into sports practices; community

13

groups don’t want to wait longer for gyms and fields and before- and after-school programs don’t want to change their schedules.

This time, however, they’ve got Seattle School Board President Sharon Peaslee on their side. She herself is the mother of two high school students. Peaslee hopes other board members will pass her plan calling on the district to find a way to make the changes.

B.She found a faster way to the school.

C.She took a private city tour bus to the school. D.Her family moved to a house near the school.

2.People who signed the online petition want schools to ______. A.provide a school bus service B.delay school start times

C.improve the quality of lessons

D.stop students from falling asleep in class

3.Why did parents’ attempts to change school start times fail? A.Not enough people signed the petition.

B.No scientific evidence could support their idea. C.It would influence the schools’ schedules.

D.It would influence many out-of-school activities. 4.What can we infer from the article?

A.More parents will hire a private bus for their children. B.Seattle schools plan to change their schedules next year. C.There will be less after-school activities and programs.

D.There is now a higher chance of delaying school start times.

13. Exciting screams of joy from two happy little girls rang across the beach. But I walked along, hardly aware of them. I’d come to this remote beach on my sailboat, a place to escape. My marriage was in trouble. I worried about the harm to my two boys. But I didn’t know how to make things better.

“Help! Help!” The girls screamed. I saw one girl was at the edge of the surf, yelling. I charged into the waves, swam to her and seized her. “But where is the other girl?” I looked across the water and saw a small head after a big wave. I shifted the girl I’d rescued to my back. She told me the other girl was her sister. For a moment I thought of my boys. How much they loved each other. How much I love them.

I quickened my swimming and held the second little girl. We were at least 50 yards from land. No way could I swim that far, not with two girls hanging on me. But there was no time to wait. I swam as hard as I could, but the weight of the girls grew heavier with every minute. My lungs burned. I opened my mouth to take a breath, but instead swallowed water. I choked. Couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t swim. From behind me I felt an unbelievable force, lifting.

“Mommy!” The cry suddenly aroused my consciousness. I looked up. An elderly man was trying to drag me out of the water. Two women were swimming

14

toward shore. “Thank you,” one of the women cried. “You saved my daughters.” My efforts and my struggles had paid off. I thought of that big wave, lifting me and pushing me. When my body had failed me, and when all hope was disappearing, I was given the strength I needed.

I stood up. My family were waiting for me. There were things I could do. I just needed to make an effort. The strength would be given to me. 1.Why did the author turn a deaf ear to laughter of the two girls? A.Because he was lost in missing his wife.

B.Because the sound of sea waves was too noisy. C.Because he was trapped in his own problems. D.Because he hurried to go sailing.

3.What might the author do after the accident? A.Rebuild a family B.Save his marriage

C.Focus on his boys’ safety D.Apologize to his wife

4.Which can serve as the best title of the passage? A.Efforts to Save the Family B.The Adventurous Surfing C.Struggles to Fight Sea Waves D.The Magical Wave

14. Mom wanted only one thing for her birthday. “Can you find me another copy of this song?” she asked, and handed me a worn-out cassette tape (磁带). I knew exactly what was recorded on it: My Redeemer (救世主). I heard the song played at least a thousand times while growing up. After so many years, the cassette tape was too worn out to be used. I promised her I would find a replacement.

My Redeemer became Mom’s favorite song after my younger brother Tim was killed by a drunk driver in 1973. The only thing that helped her calm down was the soulful sound of My Redeemer from the local radio station.

We recorded it on a cassette tape so she could listen to it any time she wanted but none of us knew who the soloist (独唱者) was. These days, I thought the song would be easy to find out. I went home and searched the Internet. Several songs with that title popped up, but none of them was the one Mom loved. I got frustrated.

Mom’s birthday drew near and then one day, I was driving home, listening to our local radio station. A familiar tune came on. It was My Redeemer! As soon as I could, I phoned the station. I got a line on the soloist, who was called Alan Parks. I typed his name into Google and found his home number in South Carolina.

15

Minutes later, I was telling him how much his recording meant to Mom. He offered to ship two CDs out to me personally. I gave him my address.

‘Red Lion, Pennsylvania?’ he said. ‘Do you know the Logans?’ ‘They are our neighbors!’ ‘I’ve been friends with them for 25 years,’ Alan said. ‘They’ll be at my concert at York Gospel Chapel on April 17th. Would you and your mom come too” We sure would. Mom was excited to hear Alan sing My Redeemer to her, live in concert —on the evening of her 87th birthday.

1.Why was the song My Redeemer so important to the author’s mother? A.Tim gave it to her.

B.It was a comfort to her.

C.It was a love for her husband. D.It reminded her of her friends.

2.What does the underlined part “popped up” in Paragraph 3 mean? A.Looked up. B.Showed up. C.Got up. D.Woke up.

15. I live just outside of Kalamazoo, Michigan. Several years ago, I bought a new house on the edge of a wooded area. I like to feed birds, so upon moving in, I put a feeder up in my backyard. But before the sun even set that evening, squirrels were swinging off the bird feeder and driving the birds away. I realized that I had to do something or the birds would soon be too scared to come near the feeder. I’m not a mean guy and wouldn't do anything to hurt the squirrels, so after my several peaceful attempts failed, I visited my local hardware store and bought a

“squirrel-proof bird feeder”. The label said it was guaranteed, so I took it home and put it in my backyard.

But by sunset, squirrels were once again swinging off the bird feeder. Really upset, I took the feeder back to the hardware store, demanding a full refund. “Calm down,” the manager told me. “I could’ve told you when you bought it that there’s no such thing as a squirrel-proof bird feeder.”

“You mean we can land a man on the moon but our brightest scientists can’t design and manufacture a bird feeder that can outsmart an animal with a brain the size of a pea?” I asked.
