Take a train to your first out-of-town destination 页 and adjust to 26 on the left along quieter roads first. Build up your confidence on country and secondary roads, before trying high speed 27 and big city centers. 第 When renting a car in the UK, make sure to ask for an 28 transmission if you are more comfortable driving one. UK drivers usually learn to drive a standard transmission first and most 2 29 cars are manual. On motorways, the speed limit is usually 70 mph, but on country roads it 页 slows 30 to 40 or 50 mph. And once you enter a village, the speed limit is never more than 30mph --- slower limits are posted. Be careful about this because all over the UK, town centers are now 31 with speed cameras that watch the unwary (粗心的). If you see a yellow sign with a picture of a camera on it, a 32 speed camera will be watching you within about 200 yards. A zebra is a pedestrian crossing. Once a pedestrian steps off the curb onto a zebra crossing, you must stop and remain 33 until the pedestrian has finished crossing and has stepped back onto the sidewalk. Zebras consist of white stripes 34 on the road. They are further marked by stripes poles, on each end, topped with ball-shaped yellow lights. Usually, they also have spotlights aimed at the stripes on the road. Most settled areas will have one or more zebra 35 , near shops, schools, businesses and churches. Part Ⅲ Reading Comprehension (20 questions, 2 points for each, 40 points in total) Passage One Staying married has its benefits, especially financial, as a new US-wide study shows: the wealth of a married person is almost double that of somebody who is single. Divorce among US baby boomers reduced personal wealth by about 77 percent compared to that of --------------------------------------------------------------a single person, while the financial standing among those who remained married almost doubled, according to a nationwide study released this week. “If you really want to increase your wealth, get married and stay married. On the other hand, divorce can devastate your wealth,” said Jay Zagorsky, author of the study and a research scientist at Ohio State University's Center for Human Resource Research. Married people will see an increase in wealth that is more than just adding the assets of two single people, according to the study that was published in the Journal of Sociology. Those who remained together saw a 93 percent gain in wealth compared to that of a single person, while individuals facing divorce saw their financial situation deteriorate long before the decree became final, according to Zagorsky. The study used data from surveys taken over a 15-year period involving 9,055 Americans who were between 21 and 28 years old in 1985. Those respondents who remained single had a steady, but slow 装--------------------growth in wealth, from less than $2,000 at the start of the surveys up to an average of about $11,000 after 15 years. However, those who married and stayed that way showed a sharp increase in wealth accumulation after marriage, growing to an average $43,000 by the 10th year of marriage or by about 16 percent a year. For people who married and then divorced, there was a slow build-up of wealth during the early years of marriage and then a steadily decline about four years prior to divorce. “Many of these 订--------------------people may have separated before the divorce became official, which would help explain why wealth starts falling so early,” Zagorsky said. “Divorce is often a long and messy process, and you can see this in the four-year decline in wealth.” The study also cast doubt on a common assumption that divorce is much harder financially on 线women than on men. In fact, it showed that women suffered financially only slightly more than men. -------------------------------------------------------------- 36. According to the study, when did the divorced individuals begin to suffer from decrease in wealth? A) Three years before the divorce. B) Long before they got divorced. C) As soon as they got divorced. D) Four years after the divorce. 37. What does “respondents” in Paragraph 5 mean? A) Analysts B) Researchers C) Divorcees D) Subjects 38. Who gains the sharpest increase in wealth accumulation? A) Those who remain single B) Those who remain married C) The divorced D) It's hard to say 39. Why does wealth start falling so early for the divorced? A) Divorce is time-consuming and complicated to handle B) They may have separated before the divorce. C) Divorce is a costly process. D) Wealth may be separated because of divorce.

40. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? A) It is advisable to remain single in order to accumulate more wealth B) The study shows that men financially suffered more than women. C) It is widely thought that women suffer much greater loss in wealth in divorce D) The result of the study accords with the common assumption of men’s and women’s loss in divorce. Passage Two Can you remember the first time you learned how to ride a bike or drive a car? Learning these skills changed your life forever and opened up new horizons. Learning about computers can be like 试 learning how to ride a bike or drive a car. Once you have invested the time to master the skills, you 题 共 will never go back to the old days. The new technology is simply too convenient and too powerful. Technological developments through the years have enabled us to do more with less effort. We 7 have continuously looked for better ways of doing things. Each invention and new development has 页 allowed us to extend our capabilities. Today we see one of the most dramatic technologies ever developed—the computer. It extends the capabilities of our minds. Computers have saved organizations millions of dollars. Furthermore, these same computer 第 systems have opened up new opportunities that would have gone undiscovered or neglected. The 3 computer can multiply what we can do,and the return on investment is high. The growth of computer 页 usage is surprising. On the other hand, the computer can do serious damage. It has the ability to cut us free from some activities, but it can also cut deeply into profits, personal privacy, and our society in general. How it is used is not a function of the current technology. It is strictly a function of how people decide to use or misuse this new technology. The choice is yours, and only through a knowledge of computer systems will you be able to avoid the dangers while enjoying the many, many benefits of the computer age. 41. This passage is probably written for ___ . A) computer teachers B) computer producers C) computer learners D) computer programmers Passage Three As high school students flock to social networking sites, campus police are scanning their Facebook and MySpace pages for tips to help break up fights, monitor gangs and prevent crime. Some students object to police looking over their shoulders. But officers responsible for school safety say routine checks of the online forums often add to the knowledge they gather from hallways or 装schoolyards. --------------------In recent years, school administrators have blamed some campus fights on Internet conflicts and urged parents to keep watch on their children's computer activity. But students who use the Web to let their 500 closest friends know what they are doing at all times are sometimes surprised that police are watching, too. 订--------------------Police don't have special privileges on Facebook or MySpace. Students who want to go unobserved can change privacy settings so that their profiles are displayed only to a list of approved people. But the default settings leave those profiles open to many Internet users (in case of Facebook) or all of them. Employers and college admissions counselors have examined online profiles of student applicants for some time. Police across the country have been doing the same for the past two or three years, said 线-------------------------------------------------------------- Kevin Quinn, a spokesman for the Minnesota-based National Association of School Resource Officers. \’re already familiar with the technology, it doesn't take you but a couple of minutes to hook into the student population and keep an eye on things,\An entrance into MySpace profiles found high school students discussing drugs, sex and fights. It was all publicly available (although in language that caused a reporter to blush). Late last month, Fairfax Country police announced the arrests of seven Chantilly area teenagers for trying to recruit Franklin Middle School students to a gang. That investigation was aided when a student showed the school resource officers gang symbols littering one of the suspects' MySpace profiles. Fairfax police say they pride themselves on the addressing issues in schools before they develop into major problems. Keeping an eye on Facebook and MySpace has become an extra tool in that effort, they said. 46. Why do campus police scan networking sites like Facebook and MySpace? Passage Four The frightening rise in crimes of violence throughout the country has caused more and more people to arm themselves. They buy guns to protect their homes and to carry with them for personal safety when traveling. Unfortunately, instead of safety, what the new handgun owner too often gets is personal tragedy. As I found out in my reading, a handgun does not protect the American home very well. The home handgun is far more likely to kill or injure family members and friends than anyone who breaks in, and is especially harmful to young adults and children. Because 90 percent of break-ins take place when no one is home, the handgun bought for defense is very often stolen. According to some statistics, each year about 100,000 handguns are stolen from ordinary citizens. These guns then enter the criminal underworld and are used in more
