Tracey Webb and her husband Keith were driving friends home to Tavistock late on 11 May when they saw two cars that had just crashed badly.

The couple had only completed their first aid training on the previous day, but they didn’t hesitate(犹豫) to act. Tracey said,“We stopped our car, and our friend Drew called 999. I ran to the cars first and checked the people. Both drivers were very shocked, but they were up and walking around. However, there was a front seat passenger trapped in one car so I asked Drew to also call for a fire truck.”

“I shouted to Keith to help the drivers, then climbed into the back seat of the car and sat holding the head of the trapped passenger, a 17-year-old boy. Both his legs were caught under the dashbord(仪表板). The car was full of broken glass. The passenger’s head was covered in glass and tiny cuts.”

Tracey added, “He was crying in pain, so I kept talking to him to calm him down. Following my first aid training, I checked for signs of injury and asked some of the boy’s medical history to pass on to the doctors.”

“An ambulance came first, and the doctors said I was doing exactly the right thing. I sat holding the injured passenger’s head upright and still for another 20 minutes and finally handed over to a doctor just before the fireman cut off the roof of the car.”

If you’re a girl between the ages of 7 and 17, and you’re hoping to meet new friends , join the Circle of Friends Club, which offers a safe environment for young girls to meet friends of their own ages on the Internet.

The site protects the email addresses of its members and allows girls to send mass emails to many friends at once. Since the club has members from everywhere, friends can be made locally, nationally or around the world.

It has a special interest search so that girls who are, for example, interested in sports can find other friends that have the same interest. Members can create their own page at Circle of Friends where they can introduce others to their family members or their friends.

Those who would like to join the club need to pay﹩12 per year. At least you’ll feel safe knowing that your daughter’s privacy is well protected here. There’s also a short list of rules, and if the rules are broken, the member will not be accepted anymore.

Rules are general: The club is only for girls who are between the ages of 7 and 17. You must stay active in the club---that is, you must send at least one letter to one of your pen friends every month. Anyone reported for using rude words in their letters will be banned.

No one is allowed to put email addresses, last name, the phone number or the name of school in letters. It’s also against the rules to ask a member to contact another member outside of the club. Every member needs to get the okay from their parents to become a member at the Circle of Friends Club. They also ask that you

Here they come----your new students and the first week of school. What can you do to set the right tone(气氛)during those days? Here teachers share their tips for starting the year off well.

First, we discuss how we felt in the morning and how it’s okay to be nervous. Next we do the yarn(纱线) trick where they all cut off a piece of yarn. I do this too. I slowly wind my yarn around my finger as I tell about myself. Then one at a time everyone else tells about themselves. Their nervousness disappears in the relaxing atmosphere.

I send a letter home before school begins, asking each child to bring in a photo of themselves doing something they learned when they were younger. On the first day, the pictures are matched with names. On the second day, we start talking about the pictures. I bring in one of me as well from when I was a child. I start talking about the picture. After hearing about me, they are eager to talk about themselves. --------Lisa Shook

It is important to show your students your confidence. They are very nervous and need to know they are following an adult that is prepared. I always tell my students that feeling nervous is quite normal but that they should know I am organized, prepared, and know exactly what to do. If they follow me and trust me, everything will be okay.
