Among various programs, TV talk shows have covered every inch of space on daytime television. And anyone who watches them regularly knows that each one is different in style. But no two shows are more opposite in content, while at the same time standing out above the rest, than the Jerry Springer and Oprah Winfrey shows.

Jerry Springer could easily be considered the king of “rubbish talk”. The topics on his show are as surprising as they can be. For example, the show takes the ever-common talk show titles of love, sex, cheating, and hate, to a different level. Clearly, the Jerry Springer show is about the dark side of society, yet people are willing to eat up the troubles of other people’s lives.

Like Jerry Springer, Oprah Winfrey takes the TV talk show to its top. But Oprah goes in the opposite direction. The show is mainly about the improvement of society and different quality of life. Contents are from teaching your children lessons, managing your work week, to getting to know your neighbors.

Compared to Oprah, the Jerry Springer show looks like poisonous waste being poured into society. Jerry ends every show with a “final word”. He makes a small speech about the entire idea of the show. Hopefully, this is the part where most people will learn something very valuable. Clean as it is, the Oprah show is not for everyone. The show’s main audience are middle-class Americans. Most of the people have the time, money and ability to deal with life’s tough problems. Jerry Springer, on the other hand, has more of a connection with the young adults of society. These are 18 to 21-year-olds whose main troubles in life include love, relationship, sex, money and drug. They are the ones who see some value and lessons to be learned through the show’s exploitation.

53. Compared with other TV talk shows, both the Jerry Springer and the Oprah Winfrey shows are_______.

A. more interesting B. unusually popular C. more detailed D. more formal

54. Though the social problems Jerry Springer talks about appear unpleasant, people who watch the show______.

A. show disbelief in them B. are ready to face up to them C. remain cold to them

D. are willing to get away from them

55. Which of the following is likely to be a topic of the Oprah Winfrey show? A. A new type of robot. B. National hatred.

C. Family income planning. D. Street accident.

56. We can learn from the passage that the two talk shows _______ . A. have become the only ones of its kind B. exploit the weaknesses in human nature C. appear at different times of the day D. attract different people

One of the founding fathers of the Internet has predicted the end of traditional television. Vint Cerf, who helped to build the Internet while

working as a researcher in America, said that the television was approaching its “iPod moment”. In the same way that people now download their favorite music onto their iPod, he said that viewers would soon be downloading most favorite programs onto their computers. “85% of all videos we watch are pre-recorded, so you can set your system to download them all the time, ” said Mr. Cerf, who is now the vice-president of Google, the world’s largest search engine. “You’re still going to need live television for certain things—like news, sporting events and emergencies—but increasingly it is going to be almost like the iPod. ”

Although television on demand has not yet become a mainstream activity in the UK, the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 have all spent vast sums of money in technology which enables viewers to watch their favorite shows on their computers.

But some critics (批评人士), including some Internet service providers, have warned that the Internet will collapse with millions of people downloading programs at the same time. Over the next four years, it is thought that the number of videos watched over the Internet will be four times as big as that. Broadband companies claim that the service will cause “traffic jams”, which will cost millions of pounds to get it to normal.

But Mr. Cerf dismissed the warnings as “scare thoughts”, saying that critics had predicted 20 years ago that the net would collapse when people all around the world started to use it all together. “In the past 30 years it’s increased a million times. . . We’re far from reaching the capacity, ” he said, “It’s an understandable worry when they see huge amounts of information being moved around online. ”

57. Vint Cerf is all the following EXCEPT that _______ . A. a researcher in the United States B. the vice-president of Google

C. one of the founders of the Internet D. a manager of a broadband company

58. What change would happen to television according to Vint Cerf? A. Television would come to an end.

B. Television would be replaced by the computer.

C. Viewers would prefer watching TV programs downloaded on their computers. D. Most people would prefer the Internet to television.

59. According to the passage, people can always do all the following EXCEPT _______ . A. watch their favorite shows over the Internet B. download live TV over the Internet

C. download pre-recorded videos over the Internet D. listen to their favorite music on their computers

60. According to the last paragraph, Mr. Cerf held the idea that _______ .

A. the Internet will collapse with many people downloading programs at the same time B. the net will collapse when people all around the world start to use it all together C. the Internet service will break down with many videos watched over the Internet

D. people’s downloading TV programs on their computers won’t cause the collapse of the Internet.

A screenplay (剧本) is a tool used to make your vision clear to everyone who reads it. Investors will want to know exactly what they’re putting their money into, actors will need to know what they are doing and how to interact with their surroundings and the film crew will need to know what to shoot. For a fantasy film, a good screenplay is necessary. Here are some tips to help you share your

vision with others.

In order to give the reader the full experience of what you’re talking about you must be sure to include many details for every scene. When watching a movie we are given a lot of information visually that we really don’t think about. For this information to successfully translate on paper we must take extra care to get our vision across. Such details as the setting, the plots or the camera angle must be clearly addressed.

When writing a fantasy screenplay you must remember that half the fun of the fantasy genre (体裁) is the visuals, so be sure to ________________for everyone who reads your script. Fantasy films often have very unique characters with equally unique mannerisms and characteristics. Be sure to note any important character traits clearly so you can convey your vision clearly.

It’s easy with fantasy to get caught up and have the visuals take priority over the story line. The main concept of any story is the story itself. Take the time to make sure the plot actually goes somewhere and that you are not getting swept away.

Make sure your ideas are fresh and that it hasn’t been done before. The last thing you want when you’re ready to be swept off your feet into a whole new word is the feeling you’ve been there before.

61. List three kinds of people who would read the screen-play according to the text. (within 6 words) ①_________ ②______________ ③____________

63. Which sentence in the text is the closest in meaning to the following one? Much more attention should be paid to the screen play if you want others to better understand your vision.(underline it in the passage)
