Last April, my husband James and I went for a walk in the countryside.We were climbing a hill when I saw a sheep lying on its side and not moving. From afar, it looked as if it was dead, but then I saw a leg move. I went over and saw the head and hooves(蹄)of a lamb coming out of her body. The head had become dry.
The sheep was hardly breathing, and I thought it was completely tired. The lamb was not moving. We watched for a few minutes, but there was no movement. So despite knowing nothing about sheep, I said I was going to help.
James googled “how to deliver（接生）a lamb”and told me how to do it. One important bit of information was that if the head is out and the two front hooves are tucked(缩拢) under the chin(下巴),that' s the correct birthing position.
I knelt down and put one hand around the back of the lamb’s head and one on its chest, so that I could put my hands inside the sheep slightly. Finally, the lamb slipped out into my arms. After a minute, I felt a heartbeat. I felt joyous.
When the lamb was breathing, I tried to stand it up but because it had been in the birthing position for so long, its legs kept curling under. The ewe, the lamb’s mother, had started passing a very large afterbirth, and still wasn’t responding.After a while, she stood up and started eating grass as if nothing had happened. So we stayed around her and started “herding” (放牧)her. She slowly went towards the lamb and finally picked up the smell. She gave it a lick and the lamb slowly got to its feet.
A week later, James and I went for a drink with friends, and they invited us back for dinner. They had a leg of a lamb in the oven, but I said, \won't eat lamb anymore. \
