5. Which of the following shows Makenna’s attitude? A. One good turn deserves another. B. Something small can make a difference. C. True happiness comes from helping others. D. Helping others will benefit yourself as well.

B

The hardest question people ask me is, “What’s your favorite book?” My mind goes blank, then gets as busy as a New York City street. Titles compete for my attention: Pick me! Pick me! The Great Gatsby is fighting with Marjorie Morningstar. Little Women’s March sisters are elbowing Anne Tyler’s Tull family from Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant.

Somehow I stammer out (结巴地说出) an answer, but it isn’t a true one because I don’t have a favorite book. How could I? I’ve read thousands of books. As a strange, quiet and shy girl wearing glasses in grammar school, my best friends were books. Sometimes when someone asks me my favorite book, I answer, “Little Women,” because when I was 7 and felt like an outcast (被抛弃的人), it created a world for me to escape into.

Other times I say The Great Gatsby, which is also true. I grew up in an immigrant (移民的) Italian-American family in an old New England mill town. But somehow I yearned for (渴望) something more, something I couldn’t name. Reading The Great Gatsby was like stepping through the mirror. I understood Jay Gatsby’s own yearning — for Daisy, for the American Dream, for things perhaps he too couldn’t name. Isn’t that why some books matter so much to us? They show us something at the exact moment we are seeking it.

That was certainly true of Marjorie Morningstar, Herman Wouk’s 1955 coming-of-age novel about a young romantic woman who wants to become an actress. Marjorie couldn’t be more different than my own teenage self. Yet I felt that Wouk wrote that novel just for me. When Marjorie doesn’t become an actress but instead marries a dentist, I promised to never give up on my own dream of becoming a writer.

Still more years later, when I was lost in grief (悲痛) after my 5-year-old daughter Grace died suddenly, I saw The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency in a bookstore window, bought the whole series and read my way through winter.

So, most of what makes a book good is that we are reading it at the right moment for us. Maybe the question should be, “What was your favorite book when you were in third grade? In high school? A new mom?” Now that I can answer. 6. How does the author respond when she is asked about her favorite book? A. She tells people she doesn’t have one. B. She speaks out its name immediately. C. She makes one up carelessly. D. She has to think hard.

7. What can we infer about the author? A. She enjoys reading very much. B. She wants to escape from her life. C. She used to make a lot of best friends. D. She dressed strangely in grammar school.

8. Which book shows a true picture of the author at some specific moment in her life?

A. Little Women. B. The Great Gatsby. C. Marjorie Morningstar.

D. The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency. 9. What is Marjorie’s influence on the author? A. She set a good example for the author. B. She made the author stick to her dream.

C. She helped the author change her opinion of marriage. D. She caused the author to give up becoming an actress. 10. What does the author say about the books we love? A. They’re guides to our life. B. They matter more than friends.

I learnt from your last letter that you’re feeling upset recently because you haven’t performed well in the exams and that you even want to give up studying.

It is natural to feel upset after exams if we don’t perform well enough. To solve this problem, I think it’s important to develop the right attitude towards exams. After all, they’re only a means of checking how we’re getting on with our lessons, so there’s no need to care too much about grades. The most important thing is to analyze the cause of the failure and look for proper solutions.

Remember that failure can be a learning experience and an opportunity for a fresh start.

Best wishes,

Li Hua
