Fukuhara Ai(福原爱) was born on November 1, 1988 in the town of Sendai. She started playing table tennis at the age of three when she could only see over the table. At the age of 11, she became the youngest player in the Japanese national team. In 2003, she finished fifth in the world table tennis competition in Paris. Fukuhara Ai took part in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens at the age of 15, reaching the round of 16 in her first Olympic Games. In 2005, she became the first foreigner to play in China?s table tennis games and played together with her favorite star Wang Nan, the famous Chinese female table tennis player. She has been taught by many Chinese coaches since then and stayed in China most of the time. Playing in China helped Fukuhara Ai to place 12th in the ITTF(国际乒联)world rankings(排名), the highest women?s single player from Japan. Her lively and never-giving-up character has made her a popular sports star , especially in Japan and China.

Fukuhara Ai has been widely praised for her ability to speak fluent Chinese, “China is my second hometown, so please do not hesitate to give me cheers when I am playing.” She said when she was competing in the 48th World Table Tennis Championships.
