The brain receives information from the outside world through the sensory system. This information is gathered through the eyes, the nose, the ears, the mouth and the surface of the body. It is then kept in the memory. In fact, scientists do not fully understand how the memory works but they have not shown that there is any limit to the amount of information that the human brain can store. Also, it appears that the information is never lost. Very old people often remember things that happened in their childhood which have not come to their minds for sixty to seventy years. If we have stored something in our memory, it is here. But can we get it out again and use it? That is the difficulty.

Some of the information we receive only goes into the Short Term Memory. We only keep this information for a minute or two, then we lose it. This temporary memory is very important in our thinking and understanding. It is used, for example, when you try to remember a name that someone told you a moment ago or a telephone number that you are going to dial. School children in class often seem to use the Short Term Memory if they are not interested in the subject. When school teachers describe this, they say that things go “in one ear and out in the other”. But if a child is interested, he puts the information in his Long Term Memory, and he never loses it (th course, sometimes he cannot bring it to mind). Long Term Memory depends heavily on our understanding of the meaning of the information we receive.

Dinosaurs suddenly disappeared about 65 million years ago. There are a lot of theories on why they died out. And the most famous is the asteroid(小行星)theory.

Many scientists think that at that time a 10-kilometre-wide asteroid hit the Earth. It broke the Earth?s outer covering, and made hot dust fly into the sky. Then the hot dust caused fires, storms, acid rain, and even volcanoes. The great heat killed most living things.

The large amount of dust in the sky formed a layer so sunlight couldn?t reach Earth for months and the temperature became lower and lower. As a result, more dinosaurs died. Because plants could not grow without sunlight, they soon died. So if there were still some dinosaurs strong enough to survive, they had nothing to eat and so, died out.

A recent study shows that at that time two asteroids moving between Mars and Jupiter hit each other and sent many huge rocks to the Earth, including the ones that killed the dinosaurs. However, no one knows the truth. Now what do you think? 104. What is the most famous theory on why dinosaurs died out?
