After four months running, the national children’s singing competition has come to an end in Beijing, but the wonderful songs and music still remain in the air.

One of the ideas growing out of the event is to sing China’s Tang poems. The movement has given great inspiration to those who compose songs for children.

Excerpts from well-known poems of Li Bai, one of China’s greatest poets, are perfectly mixed with music of the 21st century. As these children sing, it’s how they find pictures and songs in the ancient poems.

“Reading Poems of Tang Dynasty” is a golden award winner of the 2007 national composing competition for children’s song. Winning again at this year’s nationwide children’s singing competition, the song will be collected in an album which contains another 20 pieces inspired by the famous ancient poems.

Famous composer Gu Jianfen says there’s no better way to attract the younger generation than through singing, especially when asking them to memorize the legacy(遗产) of their ancestors.

Gu Jianfen, composer, said, “When we recorded the song, we discovered how involved the children were. Their sincere feelings and true thoughts let us learn the innocence of young hearts. For me, nothing is more precious than this.”

Singing is also one great way for those young minds to sing out their gratitude(感激) to their parents, teachers and those who care for them. Those kinds of songs have taken a big slice of the winning pieces at this year’s competition.

Van Gogh’s most expensive Still Life set for exhibition

Hong Kong residents will have the opportunity to see the most expensive Still Life work by Vincent van Gogh for free on Mar.23 rd and Mar.24th. It was bought by mainland media mogul(大亨)Wang Zhongjun for a record US $61.8 million last December．

The painting by the Dutch artist, Still Life, Vase with Daisies and Poppies, will be on show at an exhibition called “What’s Art” in Hong Kong, along with Pablo Picasso’s prized painting Femme au chignon dans un fauteuil, which is also owned by Wang．

Wang bought the 124-year-old van Gogh painting at a Sotheby’s auction(拍卖会)in New York last November. He bought the Picasso painting for US $29.9 million at another Sotheby’s auction in January． Introduction of the work Still life, Vase with Daisies and Poppies

Still life, Vase with Daisies and Poppies has been described as the most important painting of its kind to go on the market in two decades.

It was produced by the Dutch artist in 1890 at the house of his close friend Dr．Gachet in Auvers-sur-Oise, Paris．

The volume of fresh water pouring from the world’s rivers has risen rapidly since 1994, in what researchers say is further evidence of global warming. The study, led by a team at UC Irvine, is the first to estimate(估计) global fresh-water flow into the world’s oceans using observations from new satellite

technology rather than through computer or hydrological(水文学的) models.

The study found that annual fresh-water flow increased 18% from 1994 to 2006, suggesting an acceleration in the global water cycle of evaporation(蒸发) and rainfall, which influences the intensity of storms, floods and droughts.

UC Irvine Earth System Science professor Jay Famiglietti, the principal investigator, said that the data have major meanings for California, where warmer temperatures are already causing earlier snow melt. Rising sea levels are expected to significantly change the state’s long coastline.

“Until now, we have had no continuous record of global-scale river discharge,” said Famiglietti. He noted that the time period of the study was short, but added, “If these trends last, they will be a smoking gun that the water cycle intensification, predicted by climate scientists, is already upon us.”

Globally, river flows are often a politically-concerning subject. Countries measure the quantity of water locally, and inconsistently, with mechanical or electronic gauges(计量), but they often refuse to share the data, according to hydrologist Peter Gleick, editor of the biannual “World’s Water” survey and director of the Oakland-based Pacific Institute think tank.
