第I 卷

A

Michael Phelps made it official on Monday, announcing on Today that he is packing away his Speedos and saying goodbye to the world of competitive swimming. ―Done, done, done — and this time I mean it,‖ Phelps told host Matt Lauer. ―I wanted to come back and finish my career how I wanted and this was the cherry on top of the cake.‖

If there was a record for breaking records, Michael Phelps would doubtlessly wear his goggles and cap to swim for it. But the ―Baltimore Bullet‖ couldn’t add to his 23 Olympic gold medals in the 100 — meter butterfly last Friday as he was beaten by outsider Joseph Schooling. Schooling became the first Singaporean athlete to win a Games gold — and did so in an Olympic record time of 50.39 seconds.

Phelps finished in a three — way tie for the silver – the 27th medal of his career — along with South Africa’s Chad le Clos and Laszlo Cseh of Hungary, as they all clocked the same time of 51.14 seconds. Phelps had to wait to see if he could add to his 23 gold medals in last Saturday’s men’s 4x100m freestyle medley. You guessed it — Michael Phelps wrapped up his Olympic career last Saturday with yet another gold medal in the 4x100 medley relay. Phelps completed the third leg of the race and Team USA finished with an overall time of 3:27.95, an Olympic record. The race concludes the unprecedented Olympic career of Phelps, who will leave Rio de Janeiro with a gold medal count of 23, a long list of world records.

While Phelps is determined that these are his last games, it’s worth noting he’s announced his ―retirement‖ once before, at the end of the 2012 Olympics in London. Last Friday, teammate Ryan Lochte said he wouldn’t write Phelps off for the 2020 games just yet.

Reflecting on his career ahead of the Rio Games in an interview, Phelps says he didn’t intend to upstage legendary swimmers that came before him, like Mark Spitz. He just wanted to be the best Michael Phelps possible.

21. How many Olympic gold medals did Phelps get in total?

A.21 B.22 C.23 D.24 22. Which of the following is not true according to the passage? A. Michael Phelps had announced retirement once in 2012.

B. Schooling won an Olympic gold medal for Singapore for the first time. C. Phelps got the silver medal by defeating Chad le Clos and Laszlo Cseh.

D. Ryan Lochte expressed he considered having a place left for Phelps for the 2020 games. 23. What can we infer from Phelps’ reflection on his career?

1

B. He wanted to be the best swimmer in the world. C. He is satisfied with his achievements.

D. He dreamt of being better than Mark Spitz. 24. What can be the best title for the passage? A. The best swimmer — Michael Phelps B. The last show of the ―Baltimore Bullet‖ C. A gold medal

The headphone cord — a common sight in New York and something Apple believes will soon become a thing of the past.

And audio consultant Michael Toto at the New York store Stereo Exchange says it's music to the ears of the headphone industry. ―They're wonderful companions for walking around, doing work, listening to music. That wireless category is going up in quality and definitely is going to increase in popularity. Now that the lightning cable is the norm, people are just going to say, 'I want wireless.' ‖

Audio experts say Bluetooth technology commonly used in wireless headphones is reliable but has its drawbacks. ―Beyond issues of battery life, the sound can be compressed, affecting quality.‖ And for those looking to make a switch to wireless headphones there's also a cost factor to be considered. Industry analysts say you're likely to be paying a bit more for the wireless option. Using an adapter, wired headphones can still be used on the new iPhone 7.

But many here in New York aren't happy that Apple made the switch.

―One more thing you gotta get, I just prefer to have it all built in. It's probably a bit heavy and awkward with an adapter on it.‖ \don't like things in my ear wireless like Bluetooth, I don't like that.‖ ―It's just another way to make money I think.‖

Despite the move from Apple, the company's CEO and founder Jonathan Levine says there's still room in the market for wired headphones. ―I think there's still a customer base and a clientele that wants it and you see it if you look at what's gone on with vinyl and turntables that resurgence of analog so it may be gone but it's not forgotten.‖

Tim Cook: ―It's the best iPhone that we've ever created.‖Apple's CEO Tim Cook believes wireless is the way of the future, but for now, that message appears to be falling on some deaf ears. 28. 30. The wired headphones are still being produced for some reasons except___. A. Money can still be brought in

The sounds you make while chewing have a significant effect on the amount of food you eat, a new study has found. The results suggest that people are likely to consume less if they can hear themselves eating. Researchers at Brigham Young University and Colorado State University have found that your TV, radio, and computer are making you fat. Not by bombarding(炮轰) you with food ads (though they totally are) but by blocking the sounds of your chewing. In a recent study, they found that the noise your food makes while you’re eating can have a significant effect on how much food you eat.

―Sound is typically labeled as the forgotten food sense,‖ adds Ryan Elder, assistant professor of marketing at BYU’s Marriott School of Management. ―But if people are more focused on the sound the food makes, it could reduce consumption.‖ ―For the most part, consumers and researchers have overlooked food sound as an important sensory(感官的) cue in the eating experience,” said study coauthor Gina Mohr, an assistant professor of marketing at CSU.

The team carried out three separate experiments to quantify the effects of ―food sound salience‖ on quantity of food consumed during a meal. In one experiment, participants were given snacks to eat while they wore headphones playing either loud or quiet noises. The ones loud enough to mask the sound of chewing made subjects eat more — 4 pretzels (a crisp salty biscuit) compared to 2.75 pretzels for the ―quiet‖ group.

In another of their experiments they found that just having people hear chewing sounds through an advertisement can decrease the amount they eat. Elder and Morh call this the ―Crunch Effect.‖ The main takeaway of their work should be the idea of mindfulness, they said. Being more mindful of not just the taste and physical appearance of food, but also of the sound it makes can help consumers to eat less.

―When you mask the sound of consumption, like when you watch TV while eating, you take away one of those senses and it may cause you to eat more than you would normally,‖ Elder said. ―The effects many not seem huge — one less pretzel — but over the course of a week, month, or year, it could really add up.‖

So the next time you sit down for a meal, take your headphones off and mute the TV. Or find a movie where there’s a lot of very audible chewing.

32. What can we know according to Paragraph 3? A. Sound is universally regarded as a food sense.

B. People always ignore the importance of the sound made while eating. C. If people concentrate more on the food they eat, they will eat less. D. Ryan Elder is a researcher who labels sound as a forgotten food sense. 33. People in the first experiment eat more because ______. A. They didn’t watch the advertisement. B. They wore headphones while eating. C. They like the snacks they were given.

D. They couldn’t pay any attention to the chewing sound.

34. Which of following word is close to the underlined word ―mindfulness‖ in Paragraph 5? A. caution B. notice C. warning D. consciousness 35. In which magazine can you read the article?

A. Science and Technology B. Popular Fashion

In the business of day-to-day life, we often forget to stop and be grateful for the present moment. 36 It has many mental and physical benefits. If you want to work on being more grateful, try shifting your focus throughout the day. Work on practicing mindfulness, which can help you appreciate the present moment. You should also find a balance, allowing yourself to feel grateful.

37 Mindfulness is also about paying attention to your breath. Breathing is a vital bodily function that we often do not notice throughout the day. Start making a conscious effort to focus on your own breathing.

Breathing is a natural process that follows a certain rhythm. Therefore, when our minds wander and stressful thoughts occur, focusing on the breath can help us stay calm. 38 Find a comfortable place to sit. 39 Think of three or four phrases that sum up your core desires. For example, you might come up with something like, ―May I be happy in my pursuits. May I have good health. May I be calm and patient throughout the day.‖

Say this prayer for yourself. 40 Direct it towards someone you are thankful for in your life. For example, ―May my mother be happy in her pursuits. May my mother have good health, etc.‖ A. Focus on the breath. B. Then, direct it outwards.

C. As a result, we feel regretful later. D. However, being grateful is important.
