have found that children in China get marks in maths up to 30 per cent higher than English students of the same age.
The ‘whole class’ teaching was common(普通的)in England until the 1950s, the teacher teaches all the students together by using a blackboard, while testing the children with questions. But some people didn’t agree this was too teacher-centred, and instead they suggested the ‘child-centred’ method. It has been popular in primary schools since then. Students are encouraged to ‘discover’ knowledge by themselves. They can work at their own speed or in small groups, and the teacher just gives them support.
Mr. Gibb wanted schools across the country to accept the ‘whole class’ teaching, particularly(尤其)in maths and science. He said Shanghai schools topped international league tables. Students in Southampton in England and Nanjing in China took maths tests. It turned out that the Chinese students scored between 20 and 30 per cent higher than the English students. British teachers also found that students in China sit in rows of desks facing the front. Students in England often sit in groups.
Prof Reynolds said he was sad that more schools would not make full use of the ‘whole class’ teaching.
