“We’re stopping here? At this shabby old building?” Then I was told that the Sanhe Tile Kiln (三和瓦窑) was a treasure in Taiwan. Seriously? My heart sank as we walked toward what appeared to be mounts of dirt. The place looked like no treasure I’d ever seen.
My disappointment soon melted into anticipation as we walked into the Sanhe Tile Kiln. I soon realized that this wasn’t just any old building. This place, hidden in the heart of Kaohsiung, revolutionized the production of bricks in Taiwan. The piles I had mistaken for dirt were actually clay: a key ingredient in bricks.
Long ago, many buildings around Taiwan were made from bricks sourced from Fujian Province. But this all changed when hundreds of brick kilns popped up all over the island. Of all the kilns that once operated, the Sanhe Tile Kiln is the last one standing. It has been in operation for over 100 years. Considered a treasure, the factory is part of the cultural heritage of the island.
At the Sanhe Tile Kiln, making quality bricks is serious business. Fortunately, Kaohsiung has exceptional clay and water, which are essential. Workers dig clay out of the ground and put it through a machine to break it up. Water is then added, and the mixture is put into another machine to form clay blocks. When the blocks are the desired shape, they are set aside to dry. Then the bricks are piled in the kiln.
Next, workers start a fire with straw and slowly raise the kiln’s temperature until it reaches 1000 degrees Celsius. Throughout this process, the temperature must rise steadily or else the bricks will fall into ruins.
Most of the bricks produced here are used to repair historical buildings. However, the Sanhe Tile Kiln will custom-design art pieces to meet your needs.
Making bricks is a long process, taking three to four months. It requires a lot of hard work, patience and devotion. But in the end, it’s worth it. I left the Sanhe Tile Kiln with a greater appreciation for the art of brick making.

The University of Miami’s newest hospital has a six-bed emergency room, operating room, intensive care unit, a birthing suite and outpatient clinics. The only thing missing is patients. Instead, nursing students get a realistic clinical experience using computerized mannequins (fake patients) and staff actors.
“Practicing on real people can be a bit frightening environment, and as our patients become more knowledgeable, they tend to hesitate when a student walks in,” said Susana Barroso-Fernandez, who oversees UM’s simulation (模拟) program. “We created this environment to allow students to practice and make mistakes and never put a patient or student at risk.”
This hospital is part of a growing trend of colleges building simulation centers to provide real-life experiences to students. The move toward simulation has increased as nursing programs have grown faster than hospitals’ capacity to accommodate these students.
A 2014 study found that colleges could substitute simulation for up to half of all clinical experience without any negative results. The students scored just as well on nursing license exams as those getting most of their experience in hospitals and healthcare centers.
There are major benefits to simulation, officials said. In addition to giving students a safe environment to practice, it also gives students experience with rare situations, but still crucial for them to know how to handle.
The Simulation Hospital will also be used as a training venue for people outside of UM, including hurricane training. “It’s not just about nursing education,” said Susan.

Peter Ripken loves literature and reads books by writers all over the world. He learned years ago that not all nations permit writers to express themselves freely. In fact, free expression can be quite dangerous in many places.
So, Ripken decided to act. He helped establish an organization, The International Cities of Refuge Network (ICORN), to protect writers. Its founders sought to persuade cities, not central governments, to give refuge to persecuted(受迫害的) writers. He was involved right from the beginning, from the mid-1990s, to set up this program.
