The first cheerleader was a man. In 1898, Johnny Campbell jumped in front of the crowd at the University of Minnesota and shouted for his team. Parents like Mr. Xiao has made the government take some actions to stop the crime in the past twenty years. Since 2009, more than 54000 children have been rescued and 11000 trafficking gangs(团伙) were caught.

Now parents and activists have been using websites and microblogs to share information about cases(案情) and draw public attention to children abduction and trafficking. Chinese politeness has always followed strict rules, although sometimes Chinese people seem to be impolite according to Western norms(准则) in public places. To well understand Chinese, something must be remembered:

Mianzi (Face):

The idea of shame(羞愧), usually expressed as “face” could be considered as the “status(身份)” or “self-respect(自尊)” in Chinese and it’s certainly strange to foreigners. It’s the worst thing for a Chinese to lose face. Never embarrass(使某人尴尬), shame or shout at a person in public. Since all these actions would probably put a Chinese in a situation that he might lose face. In order to get a successful result

without letting a Chinese lose face, any criticism(批评) should be given wisely, or it’s just against what you wish.

Guanxi (Relationships between people):

Throughout much of Chinese history, what has held society together is the idea of guanxi, relationships between people. It is very important for the Chinese to have good relationships. They often regard good social relations as a symbol of personal ability and influence. Someone who has no connections would be looked down upon (被歧视) and is only half-Chinese.

Keqi:

Keqi not only means kind, polite, and well mannered, but also shows

modesty(谦逊). The expression is most often used in “buyaokeqi”, meaning “you needn’t be so kind and polite to me,” or “you’re welcome.”

In a word, do in Rome as Rome does, but you need not worry about these

cultural differences since most Chinese are warm-hearted and kind and will not mind your careless mistakes.

57. According to Western norms in public places, some Chinese people seem to be ____________.

A. well mannered B. polite C. understandable D. impolite

58. According to the passage, if we embarrass or shout at a Chinese person in public, he may think that _____________.

A. you are making him lose face B. the Guanxi between you are not good

C. you’re not being Keqi to him D. you don’t like him 59. From the passage we can learn that ____________.

A. people from western culture may find it easy to understand Chinese politeness

B. “buyaokeqi” in Chinese means “don’t be good to me” in English C. Chinese people without good Guanxi are only half-Americans

D. most Chinese will not mind if foreigners can’t understand Chinese politeness well

60. This passage is mainly about ________________. A. the differences between Chinese and westerners
