Clarkson is a large town. There are more than fifty thousand people living there. It sits next to a large river, the Clark River. Every day, people take the ferry from North Clarkson to South Clarkson to work.

A little girl stood near a small church. She wanted to leave because it “was too crowded.” “I can’t go to Sunday School”, she cried to the pastor (牧师) as he walked by. The pastor guessed the reason, and taking her by the hand, took her inside and found a place for her in the Sunday School class. The child was so touched that she went to bed that night thinking of the children who have no place in the school.

Some years later, this child was dying because of bad illness in one of the poor buildings. And the parents sent for the kind-hearted pastor to meet their daughter. As her poor little body was being moved, they found a worn purse. Inside was 57 cents and a note which read, “This is to help build the little church bigger so more children can go to Sunday School.” For two years she had saved for this offering of love. Carrying this note, the pastor told people the story of her unselfish love.

A newspaper learned of the story and published it. It was read by a Realtor who offered them a parcel of land worth many thousands. When he was told that the church could not pay so much, he offered it for 57 cents. Church members gave away a lot of money. Checks came from far and wide. Within five years, the little girl’s gift had increased to $250,000, a huge sum for that time.

When you are in the city of Philadelphia one day, look up Temple Baptist Church, with 3,300 seats in it. Have a look, too, at a Sunday School building. In some parts of the world there are large parts of the land called deserts. In these deserts there are no plants, no running water and no houses. Usually it is very dry and there is very little rain. Nothing can be seen around but sand, stones and rocks, as far as the eye can see.

When crossing these deserts, the traveler must take with him everything that he needs on the way. He must carry enough food and water for himself, and those who are with him for many days. No horse could carry heavy loads across these great deserts, but nature has given to man another animal that can do this work. This animal is the camel.

When sailors cross the sea in a ship, the ship must carry everything they need. As the camel has to do the same for its master in the desert, it has been called “the ship of the desert”. When the camel is being loaded it kneels down. Then it is low enough that its master can put a load on its back. When the day’s march is over, and the time for rest has come, it kneels again to have its load taken off.

The camel can go without food for a long time. Before it starts its walk across the desert, it drinks enough water to last for several days. It is no wonder that the people of the desert love their camels. In other parts of the world, the horse carries his master, the cow gives him milk, and the sheep gives him wool for clothing.
