Sleepless Children More Likely to Suffer from Heart Disease
MONTREAL-Children who don't get enough sleep are more likely to suffer from heart disease, researchers say, while sleep disorders in teenagers are climbing.
As researchers at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress in Montreal reported on the detrimental effects of lack of sleep on children on Tuesday,Brian McCrindle,a pediatric cardiologist at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, said in an interview that one in five teenagers reports having poor sleep and regularly takes sleep medication.
Lack of sleep is an important risk factor for developing childhood obesity(肥胖),which can lead to premature(早期的)heart disease, research shows. Obesity contributes to several risk factors for the condition such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
McCrindle's study of 1,600 Grade 9 Toronto students, average age 14 and 15,showed sleep patterns disturbed by staying up to watch television, play video or computer games, and social networking.
Poor sleep correlated with higher weight and body mass index, blood pressure, cholesterol and other poor health conditions, including poor food choices and lack of physical activity. Many reported difficulty staying awake during the day.
“They don't realize how important sleep hygiene is to their health.” said McCrindle, who heads a Canadian Institutes of Health Research team on childhood obesity.
2
B.stay with D.live with
McCrindle said that his study is a simple research of what is going on with these students. “We know there's an association but we can't make an inference about whether it's causal,” he said.
“However, sleep disturbances are quite common in teens and are associated with higher levels of overweight and obesity,”he said.
“We know from long term studies that three-quarters of over weight children become obese adults,”he said.“And while we don't yet understand the mechanism, whether it's a cause-and-effect relationship,it does provide some impetus(动力)to educate youth and try to improve their sleep hygiene.”
1.Which of the following is NOT the effect of obesity?
A.Premature heart disease. B.High blood pressure. C.High creativity. D.High cholesterol. 2.How many students involved in the research have poor sleep?
A.14. B.320. C.1,280. D.1,600. 3.Which of the following is NOT true?
