Many adults believe that somehow boys need friends less than girls do. In truth, though, no by is an island; boys value their friends throughout childhood and adolescence.

British band Duran Duran is going to be the first pop group to perform online concerts on the online game Second Life. Second Life is an online digital world, (8) ___________ is imagined, created and owned by the players – people all over the world.

It is thought (9) ___________ 370,000 computer game players worldwide have Second Life characters (Avatars) who exist in the Second Life world, on the Internet. One of the members of the band, Nick Rhodes, told the BBC News Website: “When I first saw Second Life a few months ago, I couldn’t believe my eyes. Around twenty years ago I was living in York. Though I had a lot of experience and a Master’s degree, I could not find satisfying work.

I was driving a school bus (1) ___________ (make) ends meet and living with a friend of mine, for I had lost my flat. To make matters (2) ___________ (bad), I had attended five interviews with a company and one day between bus runs they called to say I did not get the job. “Why has my life become so bad?” I though painfully.

Firefighters are trained professionals who save lives and property. They go into burning buildings. They rescue people who are blocked, scared, or hurt. They save people (1) ___________ in car wrecks and cave-ins. Some are also trained to help

keep people alive on the way to a hospital.

Last night I was driving from Harrisburg to Lewisburg, a distance of about eighty miles. It was dark and late. Several times I got stuck behind a truck (9) ___________ (move) slowly on a narrow road. I became increasingly (10) ___________ (patient). At one point along an open road, I came to a crossing with a traffic light. As I drove near the light, it turned red and I made a stop. I looked left, right and behind me. Nothing. Not a car, no suggestion of car lamps. I started wondering (12) ___________ I stopped. I was not afraid of (13) ___________ (catch), because there was clearly no policeman around, and there certainly would have been no danger in going through it.
