Spring is here and so is the cycling season. Here are some tips on how to do it safely and comfortably.

Watch your feet—Pushing with the wrong part of the foot can raise your risk of developing a painful injury of the heel and arch (足背), says

Rob Werstine, a sports physiotherapist (理疗师) and board member of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association. You should push with the ball of your foot, he says.

Layer up—While it's still cool, wear layers of clothing, with clothing close to the body that breathes and outer layers that do not absorb water. Go for bright colors that increase your visibility (可见度).

Be reasonable—If you are just starting out and aren't in good shape, don't sign up for a 50-kilometre ride. And while cycling is great exercise for people who want to get into shape, if your doctor advises you not to do tiring exercise, cycling shouldn't be your starting position,Werstine says. Walk to begin getting into shape and then graduate to cycling.

Fix the fit—If you develop lower back pain or numbness in your hands and fingers from cycling, it could be because your bike isn't adjusted properly for your height. A good cycle shopper can help you find the right height for the seat and handlebars, but if you have continuing problems, consider consulting a bike fit physiotherapist, Werstine says.

Be mindful—You have to pay attention on the roads to vehicles, other cyclists and pedestrians (行人). Consider taking a cycling safety course to practise your skills. Or do some reading about how to avoid dangerous cycling situations, bicyclesafe. com, for instance, lists 10 types of car-bike accidents and tells us how to avoid them.

Why play games? Because they are fun,and a lot more besides. Following the rules... planning your next move... acting as a team member... these are all “game” ideas that you will come across throughout your life.

Think about some of the games you played as a young child, such as rope-jumping and hide-and-seek. Such games are entertaining and fun. But perhaps more importantly, they_translate_life_into_exciting_dramas that teach children some of the basic rules they will be expected to follow the rest of their lives, such as taking turns and cooperating (合作).

Many children's games have a practical side. Children around the world play games that prepare them for work they will do as grown-ups. For instance, some Saudi Arabian children play a game called bones, which sharpens the hand-eye coordination (协调) needed in hunting.

Many sports encourage national or local pride. The most famous games of all, the Olympic Games, bring athletes from around the world together to take part in friendly competition. People who watch the event wave flags, knowing that a gold medal is a win for an entire country, not just the athlete who earned it. For countries experiencing natural disasters or war, an Olympic win can mean so much.

Sports are also an event that unites people. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. People on all continents play it—some for fun and some for a living. Nicolette Iribarne, a Californian soccer player, has discovered a way to spread hope through soccer. He created a foundation to provide poor children with not only soccer balls but also a promising future.

Next time you play your favorite game or sport, think about why you enjoy it, what skills are needed, and whether these skills will help you in other aspects of your life.

6.According to the passage, why is winning Olympic medals so encouraging? A.It inspires people's deep love for the country. B.It proves the exceptional skills of the winners. C.It helps the country out of natural disasters. D.It earns the winners fame and fortune.

In very general terms, popular culture includes the movies, television shows, sports, music, cooking, clothing styles and other examples of mass culture that society produces.

Many professors who study culture argue about what is,what is not, and what once was but is no longer popular culture. The fact that popular culture is always changing makes it even more difficult to define (给……下定义) exactly.

Most people would probably agree that popular culture is influenced in some way by the cultural products that sell well. Some experts note the differences between a popular or “low” culture and a “high” culture valued by wealthier and better-educated people in society. For

example, such experts might say that a song by Britney Spears is an example of popular culture, but music by classical composers like Mozart or Bach is not.

Then again, other experts believe that there is no longer a “low” or a “high” culture because the two have mixed together. The American economist (经济学家) Tyler Cowen does not believe in organizing culture into high and low. Instead, he says that a strong economy makes all kinds of culture possible.

And no discussion of popular culture would be complete without talking about Andy Warhol, the father of Pop art (波普艺术). During the 1960s, Warhol created a movement that celebrated turning everyday images of famous people and food advertisements into fine art.

Pop artists praised popular culture in all of its forms and made it the subject of their art. Andy Warhol said that once you understood Pop art, you could never see a sign the same way again. And he said that once you thought of Pop art,you could never see America the same way again.

8.Why is it difficult to define popular culture? A.It is changing all the time. B.Professors don't know what it is. C.It stands for specific contents. D.It varies from country to country.

答案:A 细节理解题。根据第二段中所述大众文化一直在变,使得很难给它下定义。所以选A项。

9.We know from the third paragraph that ________. A.better-educated people usually value popular culture B.popular cultural products influence popular culture C.ordinary people make some music more popular D.popular culture is influenced by classical artists

答案:B 推理判断题。根据第三段段首的点题句,大众文化在一定程度上受销售得好的文化产品的影响。后面的部分是支持这个观点的事例。

A.culture and its history B.Pop artists and Pop art C.popular culture and Pop art D.art forms and cultural products

答案:C 细节理解题。特别是在倒数第二段谈到“如果不谈及Andy Warhol (波普艺术之父),我们对通俗文化的讨论是不完整的。”最后一段谈及波普艺术家赞扬通俗文化。所
