许渊冲《追忆逝水年华》片段

在高中二年级时，我突击背熟了三十篇英文，包括莎士比亚《凯撒大将》中的演说词，考试成绩居然从中等跃居全班第二，从人中人变成人上人了，这又加强了我学英文的信心。

When I was in grade two in high school, I made a concentrated effort to

memorize 30 English articles in a short time including the speech in Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. To my surprise, I found myself was the second one in our class after I got the test score while I had been in the medium level before, which means I became a superior person from an ordinary person. This event strengthened my confidence in learning English.

到了高中三年级，我在永泰河滨读歌德《少年维特之烦恼》的英译本，觉得人与自然融洽无间，这是我从前读郭沫若的中译本感觉不到的。

In grade three of high school, I read the English version of Goethe’s The Sorrows of Young Werther on the side of The Yongtai River. From the book, I felt the harmony between man and nature. To be honest, I didn’t have this feeling when I read the Chinese version translated by Guo Moruo.

尝到了学外文的甜头，我的决心就下定了。

Getting the sweetness, I made my determination to learn English.

加上那时浙江大学从杭州迁来江西泰和，也带来了西子湖畔的歌声，我们就跟着大学生唱起英文的《江上彩虹》来，仿佛要用歌声组成彩虹，飞上高不可攀的象牙之塔似的。

At that time, we met songs that came from West Lake because of Zhejiang University’s move from Hangzhou to Taihe, Jiangxi. We sang The Rainbow on the River in English, following the university students, as if we would fly to the tower of ivory which is beyond our reach through the rainbow of singing.

考取联大之后，我辞别了江西，经过湖南，到了山水甲天下的桂林。 Admitted by the National Southwestern Associated University, I bid farewell to Jiangxi and arrived in Guilin whose beautiful scenery was said that ‘East or west, Guilin scenery is best’ by way of Hunan.

看见奇峰林立，漫江流翠，如入仙境。

There stood peculiar mountain ranges in Guilin. And the Lijiang River was full of green color. All of the beautiful scenery made me feel in a wonderland.
