Biology class was over, but I stayed behind until I was alone with the teacher. “ Mrs Oliver? “ I asked nervously. “ Could I see my grades for this term? “

School was important to me, and Mrs Oliver was the best teacher I’d ever had. She’d made science--a subject I’d always struggled with--fun. When I didn’t understand something she stood patiently by my desk and explained it until I did. I wanted to make her proud of me.

“ The last time you asked it was eighty-eight,” she said, checking her grade book. “ I said you could do better--and you proved me right. You brought it up to an A.” I was so happy, but Mrs Oliver continued. “ Duke University holds a summer academy,” she said. “ I recommended you and just found out you’ve been accepted.”

For a second I was on the top of the world. Then reality crashed back down on me. “ I can't go to college,” I said, my cheeks heating with shame.

“ Kim, you’re college material,” said Mrs Oliver. She sounded almost surprised that I didn’t agree. “ I don't want you to miss this opportunity.”

“ I’ll think about it,” I promised, but I knew it was hopeless. Mrs Oliver wanted me to dream an impossible dream.

One evening, I tried to focus on the news, but my eyelids were too heavy, so I just listened. “ Today the President welcomed this year’s National Teacher of the Year recipient to the White House,” the announcer on the television said. “ Mrs Donna Oliver from Burlington, North Carolina.”

I opened my eyes. There she was. Mrs Oliver! Shaking hands with the President! Seeing Mrs Oliver on TV seemed like a sign. That fall, I went to college and majored in biology.

Arinze Stanley is a talented yound Nigreian artist whose works often leave people asking themselves if they’re looking at a pencil drawing or a high-definition (高清的) black and white photograph. Yes, his drawing skills are that good!

His family ran a paper company, so he would often kill time by grabbing a piece of paper and trying his hand at drawing. Looking at his fantastic artworks, it’s safe to say that he has come a long way in very little time.

“I’ve got a motto I work with and that’s ‘ Practice, Patience, and Persistence’,” Arinze said. “ Constant practice made me better at what I do but it would not have been possible without persistence and patience, as it takes over 200 hours to complete a drawing and I only have time to work during the night due to my busy schedule at work during the day.”

Arinze says that he takes inspiration for his artworks from everything around him, and takes rederence photos himself using a camera, but fucuses primarily on portraits (肖像画) . He acknowledges that he often ends up staring at people’s faces unconsciously, and adds that being a portrait artist has made him a appreciate the varieties of human facial structures and detals. 28. Do plants listen to music? How can a plant possibly respond to music? Well, plants breathe through their many mouths, which are also kown as stomata and it has been discovered that plant stomata respond to music!

A few years ago, scientists at the University of California, San Diego discovered what controls a plant’s stomata. The two cells that form the stoma consist of specialized cells adjusted to the resonant (共鸣的) frequency isn’t exactly right the cells will open again within an hour. This happens even if the concentration of calcium is high enough that the stomata would normaly close.

When specific music or bird songs cause the plant to vibrate( 颤动), but not at the exact frequency for calcium resonance, the stomata will open after a misjudgement of time, even though the plant would keep them closed under normal circumstances.

Testing has shown that a leaf fertilizer(肥料) applied to the plant will have more effect on the development and growth of the plant if its stomata are wide open. This is quite logical, because plants absorb the leaf fertilizer through their stomata. Combination of frequency and leaf fertilizer are available for many different crops. However, if the stomata are forced to remain open, the plant won’t be able to control the amount of water lost and so it risks dehydration(脱水). As a result, exposing plants to music for over 3 hours a day could endanger their health. There could also be bad effects on plants if the volume or frequency is too high.

It isn’t exactly clear how music influences the development and growth of plants, but more and more is being discovered about resonance physics and we’re closer than ever to solid scientific proof and

theories in this area. Maybe, in twenty years’ time people will laugh if you say plants don’t have ears. 32. Why does the author ask the questions in Paragraph 1?

A. To express his doubts. B. To present different ideas.

C. To describe the lifestyle of plants. D. To introduce points for discussion.

33. What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A. The reopening of the cells. B. The change in frequency. C. The frequency of calcium. D. The closing of the stomata.

34. It can be inferred from the text that_____.

A. future plants are likely to have ears

B. how music affects plant growth is widely known

C. growers must be careful when exposing plants to music

D. The stomata don’t affect the effect of leaf fertilizer on plants 35. Which can be the best title for the text?

A. Benefits of Music to Plants B. Influence of Music on Plants C. How to Improve Plant Growth?

D. How Do Plants Listen Without Ears?
