W:Good for you! And what are you going to do now?
M:Now? If you mean this minute, I'm going to have a long hot bath.
W:You must need to relax. Again, congratulations. That was Peter James, winner of this year's
London to Brighton cycle race. Text 8
Good evening. It's ten to eleven and this is Andrew Brett at the International Hotel in the city
centre. The hotel is on fire. Smoke and flames are coming out of the doors and windows on the ground floor. Some young children are running out of the hotel. Now a man is opening a window on the first floor. He's climbing out of the window—this is very dangerous. At last! The fire engines are arriving. Some firemen are going into the hotel. Three policemen are stopping the traffic. Now two firemen are coming out. They're carrying an old man. What an amazing job these firemen are doing! Text 9
M:What a lovely place! Walking around here is just like going back in time. Imagine all those
noblemen and ladies having huge parties here, dancing in the halls and gardens.
W:Or how about Mozart? He gave a concert here when he was only six. Isn't it unbelievable? M: It is the colors that really impress me. The yellow walls and the green window frames. It is
like a fairy-tale world. W:What about the rooms full of paintings? And the huge lights that hang from the ceilings? Aren't
they magnificent? Don't you wish we were millionaires?
M:You don't need money to enjoy a view like that. You only need eyes.
W:Still, wouldn't it be nice to live in a place like this one here? Imagine 200 different rooms. M:It would be nice as long as I didn't have to clean them. Text 10
W:Well, Jane seemed very likeable and relaxed.
M:Yes, she was nice and calm, which is important in this job.
W:Yes, I think she could do the job well after a bit of training. The main problem, I felt, was that
she arrived late and didn't apologize.
M:Now I thought Sophie was very business-like. She looked smart too.
W:I agree. She was neat and tidy and gave the impression of being very well-organized. M:Yes, and I guess she'd be hard-working.
W:Yes, certainly not lazy and she obviously wants to do it. M:Now what about Mary?
W:I liked her at first. She seemed confident, which is a good thing.
M:Yes, you must be enthusiastic and it's helpful if you feel quite sure of yourself.
W:But after a while I began to get a funny feeling about her. I mean, I'm not sure how reliable she'd be.
M:Well, we need to feel sure we can depend on the person in this job.
W:And the other thing was that what she said was a bit unclear. I mean, she wasn't very good on
details.
M:Not very thorough , you mean? W:Yes. Text 11
W:Hi, Kevin. How is it going? M:Ah, not so great. W: What's wrong?
M:I've got a big problem with the Shakespeare course that's required for my major. W:Is that all filled up?
M:No, there's plenty of room, but I have to take the starter course before I can take Professor
Miller's Shakespeare course. It is only offered in the evening. W:You don't like evening classes?
M:That's not the point. I work in the cafe every evening. I need the money to pay my tuition. W:You can ask someone that could switch hours with you. Maybe just switch a couple of
evenings since the course probably only meets two times a week.
M:I wish I could. My boss just did me a favour by putting me on evenings. And he'll hit the
ceiling if I ask to change again.
W:Wait a minute. I have an idea. Have you checked the course over at the community college?
They might offer an introductory course during the day.
M: That's a great idea. I'm free this afternoon. I'll go over and check it out. W: Their courses are actually cheaper.
M: Thanks for your advice. I'll let you know what happens. W: Sure. Good luck!
