was sitting in the back seat of the car. He said to me on our way to the school, “Mommy, I saw an advertisement on TV last night that said someone grew a big squash(南瓜). He took the squash to the homeless shelter (庇护所) and it fed 20 people. So I was thinking, if one squash could feed 20 people, imagine what two squashes could do? Our school has a big grass area; maybe they will plant some trees and give the fruit to the hungry. Then, there will be fewer people in the world who are hungry.”

I was moved by the words from a child’s mouth, and just said that he was right, and that it was a wonderful idea.

When we arrived at class he walked right up to the teacher and made his suggestion. To my surprise the teacher refused his suggestion, saying she couldn't decide this. The next day he asked me to go to his school again. After we arrived there, he walked into the school headmaster’s office and made his suggestion, and was repulsed. I felt so bad for him, and took him aside to talk it through. He was just like an adult and said, “Well, just because they don’t see it now, we can show them by example: We have a big backyard; can we grow some vegetables and fruit and give them to the hungry?” “Sure,” I said. “That is a wonderful idea.”

I am so proud of my little son. What a wonderfully open heart! Thank you for producing these good advertisements. My son is just one child who is listening to the message and then passing it on to others.

What are the biggest problems that society will have to deal with in the 21st century? There are diseases like AIDS and cancer. There’s climate change, of course. And what about producing enough cheap food and energy for the world’s growing population? Who’s going to solve all these terrible problems? Yes, politicians and world leaders will have a big part to play. Yes, businesses will need to create the economic wealth to pay for some of these things. But who’s going to make a much greater difference to something like AIDS or climate change? It’s going to be a scientist. It is the scientist who can turn some new bit of science into a new technology to solve these

5

problems.

If you like thinking about the world around you, why not become a scientist? It doesn’t mean you have to wear a white coat and plastic glasses and spend all your time in a lab as most people often imagine! Scientists do all kinds of a amazing things that are actually interesting!

Military scientists develop not only new weapons(武器) but new military technologies that could help make wars out of date. Forensic(法医的) scientists work with the police to find quite small clues to bust (指控)criminals. Scientists work in schools and colleges as the teachers and professors who will train tomorrow’s scientists. Don’t think a scientist is far away! Maybe you like cooking? You could be a food technologist helping to keep fruit and vegetables fresher for longer. Perhaps sport is your thing? Do you know that most top athletes work with sports scientists in order to improve their performance? You could even be the science writer who gets to spend the life studying the latest advances and sharing them with the world.

Looking for something to do for the rest of your life? My advice? Take a long and hard look at science. It is interesting and ever.

In recent years, newspapers have carried stories about increased extinction (绝种) rates among animals, the greatly increased number of endangered species (物种), and the thousands of animal species that are now considered threatened(受到威胁的). Many people find themselves unsure about the differences between these terms. The differences between extinct and endangered animals are obvious, but the differences between endangered and threatened animals are not.

An extinct animal species is a species of animal with no living members. Extinct species range from animals like the dinosaurs to recently extinct animals like Costa Rica’s Golden Toad. Extinct species have no natural path to re-existence. Scientists have attempted to clone several extinct species, but have not successfully produced a cloned extinct animal able to live to adulthood. Additionally, there are species of animals known as “extinct in the wild”, meaning that the only living ones are being raised in cages.

6

An endangered animal species is a species of animal considered to have a high risk of becoming extinct in the near future. There are numerous international organizations and national laws that define(定义) “endangered ”in different ways. International conservation groups want to list a wider range of animals as endangered than national governments, because of the slower process of government organizations and the economic motivation (动机)to keep certain species from being protected. Examples of endangered species include gorillas, blue whales and Siberian tigers.

The definition of “threatened”, like that of “endangered”, varies by the organization. In the United States, the Endangered Species Act provides the legal difference. Threatened species are considered endangered, that is to say, mostly they are equal to endangered species, but in less immediate danger of extinction. Species are frequently upgraded to “endangered” or downgraded to “threatened” depending on their health and development. Examples of threatened species include grizzly bears, the bald eagle and the longhorn beetle. 64. From the passage we can infer________.

A. governments spend lots of money protecting endangered species every year B. there is no obvious difference between extinct and endangered animals C. scientists haven’t found ways for extinct animals to re-exist at present

D. international conservation groups have more experience in protecting endangered species 65. Which of the following animal species will have a high risk of becoming extinct in the near future?

A. The bald eagle. B. Blue whales. C. Grizzly bears. D. Costa Rica’s Golden Toad 66. What conclusion can be drawn from the passage?

A. People are not clever enough to clone any extinct or endangered animals. B. Most government organizations are unwilling to protect animals.

C. In the USA equal measures are taken to protect both the threatened and the endangered

animals.

D. A species marked as “threatened” in one organization may be viewed as “endangered” in

another.

67. What is the best title for this passage?

A. How People Protect Endangered Animal Species B. Animal Species: Extinct, Endangered or Threatened C. The Importance of Protecting Endangered Animals D. Different Ways of Defining Endangered Animals

Every year, Google holds a competition for kids. The winner gets to have his/her drawing of the Google logo(标志) seen by hundreds of millions of people on Google.com. The title of Makenzie’s colored-pencil creation is “Rainforest Habitat”. She wrote: “I chose this drawing because the rainforest is in danger and it is not fair to the plants and animals. I love everything except spiders and snakes, but I would still save them.”

Makenzie, who wants to be an art teacher when she grows up, says she drew four different drafts (草稿) of her drawing before turning in the one she liked best. When Makenzie was announced as the winner, she gave her mom a huge hug before tearfully accepting the award on stage. “It was so exciting!” Makenzie said.

Her parents, Tammy Marie Melton and Scott Melton, were equally thrilled. “We hope and believe and want,” said Tammy. “Then when it happens, it’s still unbelievable!” Makenzie won a $15,000 college scholarship(奖学金), a trip to the Google offices in New York City and a new computer. Her school, EL Dorado Springs R-2 Schools, in El Dorado Springs, Missouri, received a $25,000 technology grant(拨款). 68. What can be learned from the passage?
