Part 3 Understanding Long Conversations

1. BACCD Transcript:

W: Mr. Nando, we would like to improve our business by using many of the work practices in your country. Do you have any advice for us? M: There are some things you can do, I think, in order to improve your business.

W: That's what we would like. What problems do you see?

M: Well, for one, I think there's something you can do about all of the wasteful paperwork your people produce. W: Do people not write things in Japan?

M: Oh, we do, but we rely a lot more on simple, straight-forward messages, often sent by email.

W: OK, that's great. Is there anything here that you like?

M: Sure, there's quite a bit. For one, I like how you don't waste much time on meetings. Most problems can be taken care of with short conversations.

W: I was concerned that you would say that managers were not necessary. I hear that many Japanese businesses are doing away with most managers. M: To be honest, that was the next thing I was going to talk to you about. Questions

1. Why did Mr. Nando visit the company? 2. What problem did Mr. Nando see?

3. How do Japanese people often send messages according to Mr. Nando? 4. With what is Mr. Nando impressed?

5. What does Mr. Nando wish to talk about at the end?

2. BAADC Transcript:

M: Liu Ting, can you help me understand a book I'm reading?

W: Sure, no problem. After you spent so much time with me as I was reading Shakespeare, how could I refuse? What's the book?

M: It's called Bao the Orphan. It's a marvelous book, but it seems very strange to me.

W: Let me guess—you don't understand why people often kill themselves in the book, right?

M: That's exactly it! When people are angry at others, they kill themselves. I don't get it.

W: It has to do with how we view relationships. A good younger brother, for example, shouldn't fight against his older brother. When the junior member of a relationship cannot oppose the senior member, the only thing he can do is kill himself. There may be no other way for him to cope.

M: That explains much of this story! At one point, a person is so angry that he runs straight into a tree and dies!

W: I suppose it sounds strange to you. But remember that Shakespeare sounded strange to me at first. It took years for me to appreciate Hamlet. M: OK, well, thanks a lot, Liu Ting.

Questions

1. What does the man ask of the woman?

2. What is unusual about Bao the Orphan according to the man? 3. According to Liu Ting, how should a younger brother act toward an older brother?

4. How does a person in Bao the Orphan die according to the man? 5. What was strange to Liu Ting at first?

Part 4 Understanding Passages

1. ABBDC Transcript:

Americans place considerable value on punctuality. Because they tend to organize their activities by means of plans, they may seem hurried, always running from one thing to the next and unable to relax and enjoy themselves. Since Americans are so time conscious, the pace of life may seem very fast. Being on time is regarded as very important. Consequently, in the US most people make an effort to arrive on time. Not all Americans are punctual, but almost everyone is conscious of time. Different types of activities have different conventions. One should arrive on the time agreed upon for meals, and for appointments with professors, doctors, and other important people. For such appointments, you may want to make a habit of showing up 10 to 15 minutes early, as it is considered a sign of respect. You can arrive any time between the hours agreed upon for parties and other social gatherings. Plan to arrive a few minutes before the time agreed upon for public meetings, plays, concerts, movies, sports events, classes, church services, and weddings. If you are unable to keep an appointment, it is expected that you inform the other party that you will be late or unable to arrive. Questions

1. Why do Americans seem unable to relax and enjoy themselves? 2. Which of the following describes the pace of an American's life?

3. For which type of activity should one arrive a few minutes early according to the passage?

4. For which activity can one arrive any time between the hours agreed upon? 5. What should one do if he cannot keep an appointment?
