thought crossed his mind:“This plane’s going to hit me.”
He was right. The plane slammed into the road, popped up a few feet, and then clipped the front of Meffert’s car.It finally stopped after hitting the divider(隔栏).Meffert pulled over.He was unhurt, and his car had received only a large scratch,so he turned his attention to the plane. He ran towards the smoke, and then he saw Frank’s wife,Janan Pisano, pop her head up on the passenger side.
By the time Meffert reached the aircraft, part of it was on fire and Janan, who was covered in blood, was on the wing trying to pull her husband from the wreck.Meffert, afraid the plane would explode, guided her to safety behind it.Then,he ran back for Frank, who had been knocked out by the initial crash, lying across both seats.
Meffert carefully positioned himself under the pilot’s arms and lifted him from the cockpit. Then he dragged the pilot off the wing and carried him to safety, where they could see the plane in flames.
The Pisanos spent three weeks in the hospital.Remarkably,Meffert’s car was the only one hit by the plane.Had Meffert been a second or two faster,Frank said, the left propeller(螺旋桨))would have ripped the top off his car and killed him.
“I play all the what-ifs—going slower, going faster. It could have been a very different result,”Meffert said.“We just had a lot of angels.”

A group of residents in the Mount Hope-Breithaupt Park area are hoping to use creativity and a splash of
color to make an intersection(交叉口)safer.
The community association came to council Monday with a proposal to paint the intersection at Ahrens and Wilhelm streets in the hopes that a striking, vivid piece of art will not only create something unique and beautiful in their neighborhood, but cause drivers approaching the intersection to slow down.
“The intersection isn’t a busy one—fewer than 2,000 vehicles a day drive through—but has been the scene of several accidents in recent years, including one involving a cyclist last year,”said Lane Burman,co-chair of the neighborhood association.
The association asked city hall for a four-way stop at the intersection, but it didn’t meet the standards. The neighborhood association would supply the paint and encourage the community to come up with a design for the intersection, likely through a contest or social media.“I think it’s important that it comes from the community, that it’s not forced on them from outside,”he added.
City traffic and roads officials would have final say over the design.
“As you approach it,you’re going to slow down,”he said.
The group would use water-based paints that would fade within a year,Burman said, allowing the city and the group to assess the painting’s impact after a year,he said.He wishes the community to get together to paint a new design every year.
City councilors were clearly interested, and approved a proposal by Dan Glenn-Graham to have city staff study the idea and report back to council about its feasibility(可行性)on Aug.11.The group hopes to paint the intersection next spring.
“I think this does create the kind of imagery that builds great communities,”said Glenn-Graham,“I think it’s a great idea that achieves something practical,by slowing down traffic, but also creates something that is memorable without spending great amounts of money.” 28.What is the purpose of the proposal to paint the intersection?
A.To attract the attention of more residents.B.To produce a unique sight around the city. C.To reduce the accidents in the streets. D.To show the residents’care for each other. 29.According to Lane Burman,we know that________. A.the proposal to paint the roads will benefit the residents B.the intersection saw quite a few traffic accidents last year C.the cyclists are always ignoring traffic regulations D.most drivers drove too fast at the intersection
30.Who is expected to provide the design for the intersection?
A.The residents. C.The city councilors.
B.The roads officials. D.The government.
31.What is the best title for the passage? A.Excellent Paintings Are Badly Needed B.An Intersection Makes Residents Worried C.Drivers Should Slow Down at Intersections D.Neighborhood Wants to Paint the Streets Safe

It wasn’t long ago that the idea of printing something in three dimensions sounded like science fiction. But over the past decade,3D printers have become widespread.
Still, using a 3D printer isn’t always simple:The machine is frequently housed within a big box,and it requires technical software and,in some cases,a detailed knowledge of design. But now,a company called 3 Doodler has transformed the standard 3D printer into a pen, allowing people to draw 3D creations freely in the air——without the need for a computer or any software.
In a lot of ways, the 3Doodler works like a sophisticated hot-glue gun:A heating element melts plastic, and it is forced out through a nozzle(喷嘴).The challenge with the 3Doodler was to find a way to make the plastic flow steadily and smoothly.
The heater inside the 3Doodler runs about 180 to 240℃ to effectively melt the most common plastic filaments(细丝).But at that temperature, the plastic would take a long time to cool, making it impossible to draw in the air.As a result, the company added a cooling fan to the 3Doodler,which brings the temperature of the plastic down to about 140 to 150℃ when it leaves the pen,and the plastic hardens within seconds.
The pen is now in its third version, known as the 3Doodler Create, and it has been used for a variety of creations, including artwork, clothing and wallets.
But despite its early success, the product still didn’t satisfy the company’s original mission. It would be an awesome kids’toy, but it was too hot.The 3 Doodler Create goes far beyond the 53℃ maximum temperature allowed for children’s products,as set by the EU Toys Safety Directive. So the company teamed up with materials scientists to develop an entirely new type of plastic.
The new pen, known as the 3 Doodler Start,is designed for kids aged 8 and older. The rechargeable battery and 16 different colors of filaments make the pen ideal for not just fun use but also classroom use,the inventors said.
32.Why does the author mention 3D printers at the beginning of the passage?
A.To show their popularity. B.To introduce the 3Doodler.
D.To stress the importance of technology.
C.To encourage people to try them.
33.Compared with a standard 3D printer,the 3Doodler is____. A.highly productive C.complex in design
B.convenient to use D.environmentally friendly
34.What’s Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The improvement of the 3Doodler. B.The working conditions of the 3Doodler. C.The structure of the 3Doodler.
D.The function of the 3Doodler.
35.What can we infer about the 3Doodler Create? A.It is not safe for children.
B.It is not produced any more. D.It used to be popular with kids.
C.It didn’t bring in much money.

Do you know how bird population numbers are gathered? Scientists find answers to changing bird populations, habits and habitats in part by asking bird—lovers to help. One way is through Project FeederWatch,a program run by Cornell University’s Lab of Ornithology that’s celebrating its 30th year. 36
First, find a convenient spot where you can see the comings and goings of birds.Maybe you have a balcony or a good window overlooking your yard.Or maybe you can do the project at your school with classmates. 37 If at home, you can do weekend counts, but if doing the project at school, choose two consecutive(连续的)weekdays.
Provide one or more bird feeders and a birdbath or dish of water, then count the numbers and kinds of birds that visit. You don’t have to sit still watching all day. 38 Ask yourself, does weather affect the habits of the birds you see? Do they visit in groups or one by one? What kind of food attracts them?
39 For example, thread Cheerios(麦圈)and blueberries on a pipe cleaner bent in whatever shape you want.Tie a string on it and hang it from a branch.Or spread peanut butter on a cardboard toilet paper roll, then roll it in seed before hanging it on a hook or branch where birds can find it.
40 The data you submit will be added to that of thousands of other feeder watchers across the country. At the same time, the observation skills gained through learning to identify birds, their habitats and eating preferences will also help you to enjoy nature more wherever you go.
A.Attach much importance to what birds like to eat. B.Just take notes whenever you notice activity in the area.
