A nineteenth-century French dramatist remarked that the only difference between animals and human beings is that people drink when they are not thirsty and make love in any season. The sociologist’s definition of the difference is more scientific: only human beings have the ability for creating and transmitting culture. More than any other species, human animals are able to surpass their biological limitations by sharing ideas and passing on what they learn to future generations.

All animals, including human beings, have certain problems in common. In order to survive as species, they must find a home, get food and provide for their young. Animals are guided by instincts that enable them to cope with these problems of existence. They respond to their environment is a fixed predictable manner: beavers build dams as homes, lions hunt for antelopes for food, and birds build nests to protect their young. Should these solutions turn out to be inadequate, animals for the most part will still go on making the same responses to the same problems. It is true that much of the behavior of higher animals is learned through direct experience. As everyone knows, dogs can be taught to overcome their instinctive dislike of cats, and parrots often learn new calls. In some cases animals have also been known to teach their offspring what they themselves have learned. Nevertheless, human beings are unique in their far greater ability to learn from experiences, to create new solutions to old problems, and most important, to use language to transmit what they have learned to future generations. While animal societies must rely on biologically inherited methods of dealing with their environment, human societies have the far greater advantage of a socially inherited culture.

Part I: Reading Comprehension(40 points)

Directions: There are four passages in this part. Each passage is followed by five questions. For each question there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Passage 1

It is reported that 6. 5 million Americans jog for exercise. The popularity of jogging has been heightened by medical claims of the benefits derived from regular participation in this activity. Regular jogging is credited with promoting a ―training effect‖ which conditions the heart to do more work with less effort; increasing the efficiency of the respiratory (呼吸) system by strengthening the muscles that assist breathing; increasing blood volume in the body, thereby increasing the oxygen-carrying capacity of the circulatory system; promoting blood vessel flexibility; aiding the digestive system; and helping to maintain proper body weight through the high calorie expenditure. It is reasonable to assume that the number of adult joggers will increase if this activity is properly taught and encouraged through school physical education programs. Children should be taught how to jog as well as to understand the benefits. It is recommended that motivational programs such as the National Varsity Club Sport Award be utilized to provide added incentive (刺激) for school jogging programs. In addition to learning the physiological effects of training noted above, students should be given the following information as guidelines for their personal jogging programs.

When jogging, run in an upright position, avoiding the tendency to lean. Don’t look at your feet. Hold arms slightly away from body, with elbows bent so that forearms are approximately parallel to the ground. Occasionally shaking and relaxing the arms and shoulders will help reduce the tightness that sometimes develops while jogging. Periodically taking several deep breaths and blowing them out completely also will help you to relax.

It is best to land on the heel of the foot and rock forward so that you drive off the ball of the foot for your next step. If this proves difficult, try a flat-footed style. Jogging only on the balls of the feet, as in sprinting, will produce severe leg soreness.

Keep steps short, letting foot strike the ground beneath the knee instead of reaching to the front. Length of stride should vary with your rate of speed.

Breathe deeply, with mouth open. Do not hold breath.

If for any reason you become unusually tired or uncomfortable, slow down, walk, or stop. 1. The underlined phrase ―training effect‖ in paragraph 1 ______. A)rarely happens while participating in jogging B)is beneficial to the body

C)occurs in professional athletes only

D)can make us work with much efficiency

2.If tightness develops in the arms and shoulders while jogging, you shall ______.

A)slow down, walk, or stop at once B)shake and relax arms and shoulders??? C)hold arms away from body D)bend elbows

3.Which of the following is correct in jogging and sprinting? A)You shall use the same foot positions. B)You shall breathe deeply with mouth open. C)Jogging and sprinting can result in sore muscles.

D)Jogging and sprinting should be done with different foot positions. 4.A title for this article might be _______ A)Jogging Why and How

B)Jogging: the Physiological Effects

C)Proper Arm and Head Positions while Jogging D)A Jogger’s Lament

5.Which of the following is NOT mentioned in this passage? A)Jogging can strengthen the breathing muscles. B)Jogging can promote blood vessel flexibility.

C)Jogging can help the athletes improve their performance. D)Jogging can keep people’s weight. Passage 2

No one plan for a garden can suit all conditions. Careful planning will lessen the work of gardening and increase the returns from the labor. Planting seeds and plants at random results in waste and disappointment.

The first consideration is whether the garden is to be in one unit or in two. With two plots, lettuce, spinach and other vegetables requiring little space are grown in a small kitchen garden. And potatoes, sweet corn, melons and other vegetables requiring more room are planted in a separate patch, as between young orchard-tree rows or in other areas where conditions are suitable for their culture.

The cultivation methods to be employed are important in planning the garden. When the work is to be done mainly with a garden tractor, the site and the arrangement should be such as to give the longest practicable rows. On slopes of more than 1 percent, especially on light-textured (质地) soil, the rows should not cross the paths, and turning spaces of 10 to 12 feet should be provided at the ends.

Any great variation in the composition of the soil within the garden should be taken into consideration when deciding on where to plant various crops. If the land is low and moist, such crops as onion, celery should be placed there. If it is high, warm and dry, that is the proper spot for early crops.

Permanent crops, such as asparagus, should be planted where they will not interfere with the annual plowing of the garden and the cultivation of the annual crops. If a hotbed, a cold frame, or a special seedbed is provided, it should be either in one corner of, or outside, the garden. Tall-growing crops should be planted where they will not shade or interfere with the growth of small crops. There seems to be little choice as to whether the rows do or do not run in a general east-and-west or in general north-and-south direction, but they should conform to the contours(轮廓) of the land.

6.The best title for this passage would be_______. A) Growing a Vegetable Garden B) Cultivating a Garden C) Problems in a Garden

D) Using Home Grown Vegetables 7.It is most important that rows ______ A) run east and west B) run north and south C) slope 1 percent

D) conform to land contours

8.Vegetables requiring little space are ______ A) spinach B) corns C)celery D) asparagus
