When it first aired in Japan in 1966, the Ultraman TV series was a hit, in spite of its poor performances and clichéd (老套的) stories, which involved men in tight suits fighting funny monsters(怪物). The TV series created a new approach for kids to dream about being a superhero or maybe even one of the powerful kaijus, which means “strange and terrible beasts” in Japanese.
July 7, 2016 marks the 50th anniversary of the series? creation. But it?s not just
Ultraman arousing fans? nostalgia (怀旧) . Other kaijus are calling memories back too.
There has long been a fascination with kaijus in Japanese culture. There isn?t even a parallel(对应的) word in English for kaiju. The word “monster” can refer to anything that is non-human, including the bloodthirsty outer-space Alien and the highly intelligent great white shark. Yet none of these characters would be considered a kaiju.
No matter what form it takes, a kaiju is best identified by its size: These creatures are large enough (even mountainous) to destroy entire cities.
One possible explanation for the kaiju is that these super-sized monsters give Japan a way of combining its history with natural disasters. Earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis(海啸) and typhoons have not only affected Japan?s environment but also the mentality of its people. As a result, the kaijus that appear in literature and pop culture are seen as “a symbol of natural destructive forces”, American writer Patrick Macias told the BBC. Kaiju also draws from a national trauma(创伤) unique to Japan: It is the only country on Earth to have experienced atomic(原子的) bombing. Considering the first Godzilla(哥斯拉) film (Godzilla is one of the most classic kaiju characters in Japanese culture) was released back in 1954, when the nuclear bombings of the two cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were still fresh in the Japanese consciousness, many people see Godzilla as a symbol of nuclear weapons. This mindset was proved to be still much alive after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear power plant accident.
32. The writer mentioned the poor performances and cliched stories of Ultraman to A. highlight the unique kaiju culture in Japan B. make fun of the early Japanese films
C. present the simple and boring life of Japanese in the old days D. introduce many Japanese children dreamed to be heroes

33. The kaijus are designed as mountainous monsters which can destroy entire cities to . A. show Japan is great enough not to fear anything
B. reflect Japan has been attacked by many big natural disasters C. show Japanese buildings are easy to be destroyed D. describe the hardness of Japanese people?s life
34. What film character might Japanese think of during the 2011 Fukushima nuclear power plant accident? A. Ultraman B. outer-space alien C. great white shark D. Godzilla 35. The most proper title for this passage may be
A. Ultraman Beats Kaijus B. Godzilla—the Symbol of Nuclear Weapons C. Kaiju Movies with a long history D. Japanese Early Films 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
