Half a century ago, the day started with my family gathering around the old black-and-white television set in our living room. My father and uncle left for Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, Aug. 27, to take part in the parade (游行) in Washington.
At the age of 11, I was unclear what that meant. At first I thought it was a parade, something that would be fun and exciting. All I knew was that my mother and father let me stay home from school on Wednesday to watch it. That in itself was strange as I was never allowed to miss classes. My aunts, uncles and neighbors were discussing how important this event would be and how it would change the future for black people all over the country in our kitchen. They were also very excited because Martin Luther King would be speaking.
I knew how important he was to my family. I asked, “Is he going to be president?” My mother replied, “No, honey, black people are not allowed to be president, but I believe if anyone can change that it will be Dr. King.” “How would a march change our lives?” I asked. Mother said that this one was different. It was to fight for the rights of blacks to work and the freedom for equal rights. Many speakers addressed the large crowd and finally it was time for Dr. King to speak.
I sat on the floor in front of our television set hoping to catch a glimpse (一瞥) of my father and uncle. The living room went silent. Although his speech was only 16 minutes long, from a child’s perspective it seemed to go on forever. However, his inspiring ending is left in my memory forever: “Free at last, free at last, thank God almighty, we are free at last!” My family wept. 26. What was strange in the writer’s opinion?
