Everybody knows the World Wide Web, but who first got the idea? The answer is an Englishman named Tim Berners-Lee.

Tim Berners-Lee studied at Oxford University until 1976, and while he was there he built his first computer from bits and pieces and an old television set. After he worked at one or two companies in England, he went to work in Switzerland, and in 1980 he worked on a computer program to organize his notes. Then he thought that it would be a really good idea to look at things on other people's computers. He designed a system called HTML that allows people to write pages and put them on a web on the Internet. In 1991, 11 years after his first idea for a program, the World Wide

Web was born. From that moment on, the web and the Internet grew together very quickly. Between 1991 and 2008, the number of Internet users jumped from 600,000 to almost 1.5 billion! Another amazing thing about the web is that it is free. Berners-Lee did not become a rich man with his invention because he always wanted it to be something free for everybody.

Berners-Lee is now a prof6ssor at MIT in the United States. He continues to work with the World Wide Web.
