Q: What is the relationship between two speakers? 16. W: You‘re finally here! What took so long?

M: I got stuck in traffic again. There was a terrible traffic jam near the KFC intersection. Q: Why was the man late?

17. M: Hello! We‘ve been waiting for our lunch order for an hour. It‘s 13:30 now. Did you forget our

order?

W: I‘m sorry, sir. Could you tell me your name and order again, please? I‘ll check on the delay. Q: When did the man order the lunch? 18. W: I hope the food here is good.

M: Yes, it is very expensive. Maybe we shouldn‘t have come here. Q: What does the man imply?

Now you will hear two long conversations. Conversation 1

M: Sister, why did you ask me to come to this bargain market? It‘s so crowded, and you can‘t find

anything that you really want.

W: You just don‘t get it. Looking for bargains can be really interesting. M: Are you serious? How can that be?

W: Bargaining is a game, or even a battle. You feel like a winner when you get a good price.

M: Come on. You know, you can never really win. The sales person never loses. They make their living

out of it.

W: That‘s true. But I just love it. Come here!

M: Oh, this silk carpet is really beautiful. Look at the pattern, and how delicate it is! W: You do have great taste. That‘s the most expensive stuff here. M: Oh, this one. I like this vase.

W: Are you kidding me? I bought a same one last week. It‘s surprising that there is something we both

like. Well, what do you think of these cups?

M: Come on. They look so cheap. Something else, please. W: What about this picture? I think Benjamin would like it. M: Don‘t underestimate his taste. I don‘t think he‘d like it. W: Don‘t be so sure. He loves the vase I bought here last week.

M: Yeah. Well, anyway, it‘s up to you. But I can tell that you come here often. W: Absolutely. That‘s why I can always get a good price.

Questions 19 to 21 are based on the conversation you have just heard. 19. Why does the woman always come to the market?

20. What did the woman buy last week? 21. What conclusion does the man get? Conversation 2

W: Good morning, Jim. I haven‘t seen you for a long time. What is wrong with you?

M: I feel run down, tired. I‘ve been having headache every day. I‘m not getting as much sleep as I

usually do.

W: Have you been eating properly? Eating the right kind of food is important for your health, you know. M: Well, I haven‘t been eating well, I guess. I usually only have enough time to grab a sandwich

and a cup of coffee for lunch.

W: That‘s no good. It‘s necessary to have a well-balanced diet. Have you been taking vitamin pills?

M: I don‘t like to take any medicine at all without talking it over with a doctor first. W: It‘s very sensible of you. How are things going at work?

M: Oh, I‘ve been promoted, so I have a lot of new responsibilities. We have had a lot of urgent projects,

so it‘s been necessary for me to work late almost every night.

W: Working late and worrying are not very good for you. It‘s important for you to eat properly and to

get enough sleep.

M: But what can I do? I can‘t just quit my job.

W: No, you can‘t do that. First of all, you should take a multiple vitamin pill with minerals. And you

have to be careful about eating three good meals a day. And it‘s even more important for you to get some exercises to help you sleep better.

M: I suppose so. I‘ve been thinking about taking up jogging. And I‘ll try to do that this weekend. Questions 22 to 25 are based on the conversation you have just heard. 22. What is the relationship between the two speakers?

23. Which one of the following statements is Not Jim‘s problem?

24. Why does Jim always work late? 25. What does the woman suggest Jim do? Section B: Passage One

Children with the brightest smiles in family photographs are more than three times as likely to have a successful marriage than those who frown. According to this research, even photos taken of family outings when the child is as young as five can show a glimpse of the future.

The researchers asked almost 650 adults for pictures taken during their final year at school and rate the brightness of their smiles. The scientists, from DePauw University in Indiana, also asked the volunteers, between 21 and 87, whether they had ever been divorced, and subsequently matched their answers with the data on their smiles.

―Smile intensity predicted whether or not participants divorced at some point in their lives,‖ the researchers said, adding: ―The less intensely participants smiled, the more likely they would be divorced later in life.‖

It found that those with the weakest smiles were more than three times as likely to have been through a divorce, according to the journal Motivation and Emotion. A second experiment, which included pictures taken of people as young as five, backed up the conclusion.

The researchers believe that those who are generally happier are therefore more likely to try to work through difficulties in relationships and marriages. They also believe that those who are happy types may marry companions who reflect their own sunny disposition. Questions 26 to 28 are based on the passage you have just heard. 26. How many adults were asked to take the pictures by the researchers? 27. Which one of the following statements is true?

28. What conclusion has been reached by the researchers? Passage Two

So you‘re between the ages of 13 and 24. What makes you happy?

Spending time with family was the top answer to that open-ended question, according to an extensive survey—more than 100 questions asked of 1,280 people ages 13-24—conducted by The Associated Press on the nature of happiness among America‘s young people.

Next was spending time with friends, followed by time with a significant other. And good news for parents: Nearly three-quarters of young people say their relationship with their parents makes them happy.

You might think money would be clearly tied to a general sense of happiness. But almost no one said ―money‖ when asked what makes them happy, though people with the highest family incomes are generally happier with life. However, having highly educated parents is a stronger predictor of happiness than income.

Overwhelmingly, young people think marriage would make them happy and want to be married some day. Most also want to have kids.

Finally, when asked to name their heroes, nearly half of respondents mentioned one or both of their parents. The winner, by a nose: Mom.

Questions 29 to 32 are based on the passage you have just heard. 29. Which is the top answer to the question ―What makes you happy‖?

30. How many young people say their relationship with their parents makes them happy?

31. Which one of the following statements is true? 32. Who is mentioned as the young people‘s hero? Passage Three

Babies given more love and affection by their mothers deal better with stress and anxiety when they grow up.

The study looked at eight-month-old children — meaning even the very earliest life experiences which we do not remember in adulthood can influence our well-being. Lots of maternal love makes children form a secure bond with their mothers, meaning they are able to feel secure in relationships when grown up, will have better social skills and cope better with life‘s difficulties.

The researchers, led by Dr Joanna of Duke University, rated the relationships of 482 eight-month-old babies with their mothers during routine developmental assessment. They looked at how well the mother had coped with her child‘s developmental tests and how she had responded to the child‘s performance.

The amount of affection and attention she gave to her child was categorized into groups ranging from ?negative‘ to ?extravagant‘. Mental health was then assessed when the babies had grown up — at the average age of 34. Adults whose mothers had been the most affectionate during their assessment as babies had the lowest levels of anxiety, hostility and general distress. Questions 33 to 35 are based on the passage you have just heard.

33. Why did the researchers choose eight-month-old babies in their research? 34. When would the babies‘ mental health be assessed? 35. Which one of the following statements is NOT true?
