11. M: I‘m freezing! It must be the wind that makes it so cold.

W: Yes. It‘s no fun standing out here, even if the sun is shining. Q: What may the two speakers do next?

12. M: Did you see the movie last night? It was an excellent film.

W: No. I read the preview in yesterday‘s paper, but I went shopping with Meg. Sounds as if I‘ll

have to see it, if they ever re-run it.

Q: Why didn‘t the woman see the movie?

13. M: Nice to meet you. I‘m from personnel. Have you brought your CV and certificates? W: Oh, my CV. But I haven‘t brought my certificates. Can I send them to you? Q: What is the relationship between these two speakers? 14. M: Come on. It‘s time for bed. It‘s 9 o‘ clock now!

W: Oh, yes. We‘re going to London by train at 8 o‘ clock in the morning. And we must get to the

station at 7.

Q: What time is the train?

15. M: I wish I could play the piano, but I guess I don‘t have any musical talent. What about you?

W: I took flute lessons for a couple of years, but I never learned to play well. My sister is a good

violin player.

Q: Which musical instrument could the woman play? 16. M: Yes, madam. Can I help you?

W: Yes, please. Yesterday my daughter bought this skirt. I‘d like to change it. Here, I‘ve got the

receipt.

Q: Where does the conversation probably happen?

17. M: John is the only person who knows what really happened.

W: Well, actually, he wasn‘t there all the time, but still I think he saw enough to give some valuable

insight on the matter.

Q: What does the woman mean?

18. M: It is so hard to understand the novel.

W: I share your feeling. Who can remember the names of so many characters?

Q: What does the woman imply?

Now you will hear two long conversations. Conversation 1 W: What was your first gliding lesson like? M: It was very interesting. W: How did you start?

M: Well, the instructor showed me the controls. W: What happened next?

M: The instructor showed me how to use them. Then we went for a short flight. W: Were you nervous when you took over the controls for the first time? M: Yes, very. My hands were trembling. W: Did you have any moments of panic?

M: Yes, when the glider was rushing towards the ground and I suddenly forgot what to do. W: That must have been frightening. M: Yes, but I like it.

Questions 19 to 21 are based on the conversation you have just heard. 19. How did the man‘s first gliding lesson start?

20. What happened when the man took over the controls for the first time? 21. Which one of the statements is NOT true according to the man‘s words? Conversation 2

M: You look rather pale. Aren‘t you feeling well?

W: Not very. I was sick most of the night. I didn‘t sleep very well. M: What seems to be the matter? Is it the flu?

W: No, I think it‘s something I ate. We ate at that new restaurant last night, and I must have eaten

something that didn‘t agree with me.

M: Was it that new restaurant over on Fourth Street? W: As a matter of fact, it was. Why do you ask?

M: Because, Jerry ate there last week and had the same kind of problem. He was sick the next day, too. W: That‘s interesting. The health authorities must investigate the place.

M: That‘s what I think. Two people with similar problems in such a short time can‘t just be coincidence!

And you should have a medical examination. W: I think so.

Questions 22 to 25 are based on the conversation you have just heard.

22. Why did the woman feel sick? 23. When did the woman eat at the restaurant? 24. What will happen to the restaurant? 25. What did the man suggest the woman do? Section B: Passage One

How many times have you seen someone take the stairs rather than take the elevator? The answer is very rarely.

I‘m the first to admit that when I see where the stairs lead, I prefer the lazy option —elevator. I also have to make myself clear that I‘m not a perfect example of peak physical condition.

When I asked my local train guard how many people he sees take the measly 31 stairs from the platform to the exit gates, he laughed, shook his head and said ―not many‖.

At my gym most of the people are aged over 50. Where are the young people?

A survey from last August by the 21st Century Education Research Institute claimed that almost 60

percent of college students only exercise twice a week.

I hope that I haven‘t made you feel too guilty and on reflection, I would hate to judge the hard-working young people trying to make something of themselves. But hopefully, we can all take on those pesky stairs at least a few times a week. We‘ll feel better for it. Questions 26 to 28 are based on the passage you have just heard. 26. Which group of people is more fond of doing exercise in the gym? 27. How often do 60 percent of college students exercise? 28. What‘s the speaker‘s suggestion in this passage? Passage Two

Too much eating. Too many unhealthy foods. Too many advertisements for food. Too little activity.

Different explanations are offered for America‘s weight problem. Almost one-fifth of American children and teenagers are overweight.

Schools have been urged to increase physical education, an important tool for public health. And many have. Yet now comes a study showing an increase in the number of injuries in class. Injuries increased 150 percent between 1997 and 2007.

One possibility is a decrease in the number of school nurses during the period they studied.

Another possible reason for more injuries is a change in the traditional idea of physical education. This ―New P.E.‖ expands the kinds of sports that are taught. But activities that some schools offer now, like rock climbing walls and skateboarding, can also expand the risks.

Injuries are often the result of contact with a person or a structure. It means that the teachers were not giving each student enough space to move around safely. Six activities produced 70 percent of all injuries: running, basketball, football, volleyball, soccer and gymnastics.

The researchers say larger class sizes are another possible reason for the increase in injuries. Larger classes can mean less supervision. The National Association for Sport and Physical Education says 20 to 30 students in a P.E. class should be the limit.

Questions 29 to 32 are based on the passage you have just heard. 29. How many American children and teenagers are overweight?

30. Which of the following is not the possible reason for the increase in injuries in class?

31. Which of the following activities is not one of the six ones that produced 70 percent of all injuries? 32. What‘s the limit of students in a P.E. class? Passage Three

A study showed people who keep fit are up to nine years biologically younger than those who do not. The findings are the first to show in humans how keeping fit affects the aging process.

The study of 2,401 twins found that a sedentary lifestyle raises the risk of a range of problems from heart disease to cancer and appears to play a key role in the aging process.

Exercise lowers the risk of a range of problems such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer, the researchers said.

―It is not just walking around the block. It is really working up a sweat,‖ said Tim Spector, who led the study, in a telephone interview.

The study found people who exercised vigorously 3 hours each week were 9 years biologically younger than people who did under 15 minutes.

Spector‘s team, who also adjusted for body weight, smoking, economic status and physical activity at work, also said moderate exercise for 12 hours each week provided a four-year advantage.

The reason why exercise has this effect is not clear but the researchers said they believe physical activity somehow defends against the natural process which damages and kills cells. Questions 33 to 35 are based on the passage you have just heard.
