Sugar apple

When Rebecca Saxon was diagnosed(诊断) with cancer at the young age of 27, she thought her life was over. But inn her darkest hour, inspiration(灵感) struck and she found a way of turning her misfortune into advantage.

Following her cancer treatment, Rebecca launched a successful business “Something Blue Bridal Shoes”--- a unique range of wedding footwear, which came out of the fashion pictures she drew while recovering in her hospital bed.

Rebecca, from London, says, “I started designing wedding shoes with blue soles(鞋底) when I was halfway through my cancer treatment. I had a hit when I was diagnosed with cancer, but I decided that I was going to pick myself up and fight this cancer. The pictures were my release and the way I got through the many hours

Rebecca had always loved fashion since she was younger. Several of her friends were getting married at the time when she was ill. “So at first, I would be drawing designs for wedding dresses and other clothes. But then I started drawing wedding footwear--- designing shoes with blue soles which were very comfortable too. I thought it would be a lovely way of combining the ‘something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue’ tradition. Drawing really helped me deal with my treatment,” said the brave girl.

With the encouragement of her boyfriend, she turned her dreams into reality and set up “Something Blue Bridal Shoes”. Each beautiful shoe has a blue sole, combining the old-age tradition of what a bride(新娘) should wear at her wedding for good luck.

One of the greatest virtues(美德) we should try to develop is the habit of independence. A man who relies upon(依靠) himself wins a sort of independence, because he doesn’t have to wait to be helped by others. To depend on others is to build on sand. Others’ help may disappear some day. Life to us is a great adventure, full of interest and excitement. “So happy is he”, said Cicero, “who is entirely independent, and who centers all his requirements in himself.”

In our country, the lesson of independence is particularly needed. We are by nature fatalistic(宿命论的) in our attitude. Our tendency(倾向)is to depend to much on fate or others to help us and to pull our chestnut out of the fire. The tendency destroys our action. But if we are courageous and active, we may become the directors of our fate. There are many people who succeed by their own efforts(努力). If it is God who has given us strength of body and power of mind, he surely expects us to help ourselves with these.

Independence is the parent of many virtues. An independent man is patient and determined. He does not feel upset at others’ success. Nor does he think about begging favor(恩惠) of others. He faces his misfortune with courage. Confidence in himself wins him the trust of others. Therefore, Emerson calls independence “the characteristic of heroism(英勇)” and “the first secret of success”. The history of human achievement is, indeed, a record of what people can do by themselves. Great heroes, great scientists and great businessmen were all self-made people.

Independence does not mean that one should be proud of oneself. It should always go hand in hand with proper feeling of modesty(谦逊). Another fault to be guarded against(提防) is selfishness. A man should be ready to lend a helping hand to others in need.

Generally, the world values us as we value ourselves. If we think poorly of our own abilities, we cannot expect others to think highly of us. The best course is to start working to our own abilities.
