The story began on a boring Friday afternoon, and everyone was dying to finish class and go home. As our teacher handed out our Time For Kids magazines, I was thinking about my plan to buy a toy on the weekend. However, one small article in the magazine attracted my attention, and ended up changing my life. It was a story about the movement against malaria.( 疟疾)

Other students had their eyes stuck on the clock, but mine were absorbed in the article. From it I learned that malaria kills one million people each year. I felt like crying. ―How can we prevent malaria?‖ I wondered. I also learned that people in Africa, where malaria is common, tie bed-nets over their beds to prevent the insects from biting them during the night. What could I do for them? That night I was sleepless, and the article stayed in my mind. I decided to do something.

I considered several ways to raise money. I imagined organizing a dance party or a bake sale --- doing something more than hanging posters at school. Finally, I decided to put the matter in my own hands.

My birthday was coming up, and on the invitation to it I requested that my friends bring donations for bed-nets instead of gifts. I raised $400 at the party.

Weeks later I received an invitation to a friend‘s birthday party. As I was looking at the invitation carefully, something caught my eye: Sophie requests that you bring donations to buy bed-nets instead of gifts. I smiled to discover that I had influenced somebody else to do as I had done.

I could never have imagined the amazing feeling that comes from giving. As the poet Maya Angelou wrote, ―I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates (解放) the soul of the giver.‖ 46. What‘s the main idea of this passage?

A. How the author celebrated her birthday. B. The way to prevent the spread of malaria.

D. How the author helped prevent malaria and her influence on others. 47. The author felt like crying because _________.

A. she was not allowed to go home 48. What did the author do to raise money?

A. She held a dance party. 49. What can we learn from the text?

A. The author‘s friends didn‘t support her. B. People in Africa suffer a lot from malaria. C. The author‘s classmates were interested in the class. D. The author likes Maya Angelou‘s poetry very much.

50. All of the following can be used to describe the author EXCEPT the word _______.

A. strict

B. responsible

C. kind

D. helpful

America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while — then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they continue the friendship again. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us run more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending (延伸) sometimes deeply into both families.

Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality (好客) easily.

Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don‘t show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is

usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time. Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably. For the Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home! 51. After the Summer Olympics are over, when all the athletes have gone home, another group of athletes and fans will arrive in the host city, and another competition will begin.
