The term Mardi Gras is French for “Fat Tuesday”. It is the last day of the carnival(狂欢节)festivities before Lent (大斋期). The next day is Ash Wednesday(圣灰星期三), which marks the beginning of Lent. Over time, Mardi Gras has come to represent the entire carnival period. One of the biggest celebrations takes place in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The French where holding masked(面罩)balls and costume parties in New Orleans as early as 1718. When the Spanish government rose to power, parties were allowed. After the Spanish rule ended, people could once again attend parties and hide their identities(身份)behind masks. During the 1850s, the elegant Mardi Gras parties continued but were in contrast(对比)to wild parties going on in the streets. The celebration was in danger of not being allowed again.

In 1857, a group of men formed a secret society called the Mystick Krewe of Comus. They wanted to save Mardi Gras with proper planning and management. So they planned the first Mardi Gras parade(游行). Next, the Krewe of Rex was formed to celebrate the arrival of visiting royalty(皇宫)from Russia. Because America did not have royalty, the man in Rex created their own “king for a day” secretly choosing one of their members to be the king of the carnival. This idea quickly caught on with other Mardi Gras krewes. Since then, many other secret societies have been set up in New Orleans. Because the krewes pay for all of the parades, Mardi Gras has been called the “Greatest Free Show on Earth.” The celebration attracts millions of visitors every year.

Many people confuse hard-working people with workaholics. What are some characteristics of workaholics? How could a person tell that he/she is a workaholic? A workaholic works long hours, at the price of personal relationships and health. When not working, they’re thinking about work. Work influences their mood: When work is going well, they’re up; when work is going less well, they’re down.

Working, or simply being busy, can be a hard habit to break. When workaholics aren’t busy working---or doing something to promote their work---they feel anxious and guilty(内疚). They hang onto jobs for dear life and do everything they can to ensure they’re important.

There is a link between health problems and workaholism. A number of studies show that workaholism has been connected with a lot of health problems, such as being anxious and heart disease.

Besides health problems, being a workaholic brings other negative effects as well. A study published in the American journal of Family Therapy found that working too much negatively influenced an employee’s marriage. There have also been studies looking at the influence of workaholic parents on their children and the news isn’t good.

However, there are also many positive aspects(方面)to working hard and to an interesting devotion to career. Hard work can bring great rewards. For many, it’s how they develop feeling of self-worth and confidence and purpose. If you have a workaholic in your life you might point out the things he or she is missing out on while at work, whether it’s a child’s soccer game, a good book, or a yoga class. Try to understand why the person feels the need to work so much and support them in finding a way out. 25. What can we learn from text?

A. Work has stronger effects on workaholics than on others. B. Hard-working people enjoy better health than other people do. C. Workaholics work to build better relations.

D. Workaholics care more about their health than others do. 26. When workaholics are not busy working, they . A. promote their work B. form a bad habit easily

C. feels uneasy and unsafe D. have a chance to prove their own value 27. What is the author’s attitude towards working hard? A. Doubtful

B. Objective C. Negative

D. Curious

28. What can we do to help a workaholic in life? A. Force him to join family activities. B. Reward him for his hard work.

C. Help him find self-worth and confidence. D. Try to be understanding and supportive.

America has had many great men and women that have influenced the nation even to the present day. The greatest American in history, however, was Abraham Lincoln because of his great contribution to American people and his great achievements.

Abraham Lincoln became President during a special time in American history. He had the ability to keep the North and South from dividing into two nations. He found out a solution, tried to view things from different angles(角度), and worked to help all involved. His contributions not only kept the nation together in the end, but also changed America forever.

Before the civil war, slavery was common in America. But Lincoln decided to do away with it. He set free black Americans in the North and forced the South to end slavery. His actions made him supported not only in the North, but also in the South.

Before the war, people doubted the new ideas of science and technology. During his presidency(任期), Abraham Lincoln helped people accept new ideas and improved science and technology to a new level.

While some might argue that war heroes like George Washington or scientists like Benjamin Franklin were the greatest Americans in history, I think the real greatest Americans were strong leaders that caused changes that lasted through centuries and led America into new ideas and new ages. Abraham Lincoln held a nation together through one of its darkest times in history, ended slavery and contributed to a change that would change the minds of the people. He changed America for the better. He tried to heal(治愈)the injuries of a nation at war and even continued to do this with his death. Abraham Lincoln was a hero, and a man unmatched in history, and truly the greatest American ever to live.

They may be called smart phones but the phones could be damaging some students’ grades. In an experiment, students who were given a free iPhone used it for social networking, listening to music and playing games rather than helping with their studies, and they admitted that they were distracted(分心)from their study.

Psychologists(心理学家)at Rice University in America wanted to see if the latest mobile technology would be used by the students to improve their learning. When given their new phones, the students said with great confidence that the new phones would help them do better in tests and get better grades without being a distraction. When asked at the beginning of the experiment if they thought the phones would help them get high grades, they gave the score which was a positive score of 3.17. But a year later, when asked if it had helped them perform better in testes, they gave the average score which was only 1.54 from the same soup, showing what the students said is incorrect.

There are many other disadvantages for students to use phones. Firstly, it is clear for us that using phones for long will do harm to their health. Some students don’t care about the safe way of using phones and they will be harmed by radiation(辐射). We all know the harm of radiation, so students should not use the phone for long. Secondly, because phones have many attractions such as a new world for entertainment, students fail to stop playing games, surfing some unhealthy websites, getting some harmful information and so on. This will take their attention away from learning and will seriously influence their study.

The researchers concluded that it’s not enough to give students the right technology, but they need proper guidance about how to use it. They gave students useful advice on how to use the phones.

33. It can be known from the psychologists that . A. using the latest mobile technology would greatly improve students learning

34. What is the third paragraph mainly about?

A. The relationship between smart phones and student’s grades. B. How to make students fix their attention on learning.

C. The reasons why some students can’t get higher grades. D. Some other disadvantages for students to use phones.

35. What is the purpose of the passage?

A. To give expert advice on using smart phones.

B. To present a new research result carried out by psychologists. C. To tell an interesting story about students using phones. D. To offer help to the users who are new to smart phones.
