Ecology: Roads and the Ecology

W Professor: Humans have been building roads ever since ancient times, which has made them become parts of the landscape. But remember that roads are unnatural, so they can sometimes negatively affect a region’s ecology. How so . . . ? Well, let me tell you a couple of the many ways they can do this.

Weeds, as you all know, are plants that grow aggressively and are unwanted because they outcompete desired plants, such as, uh, flowers and crops, for precious soil and water resources. However, motor vehicles of all types can act as carriers of weed seeds, so these vehicles unwittingly help spread

weeds along road corridors. For instance, when you drive to the park, forest, or, uh, anywhere else for that matter, your vehicle picks up weed seeds. When you subsequently drive to a new location, the seeds fall off in various places and then start growing. In this way, road systems enable the spreading of weeds to places where they wouldn’t normally be found.

Roads can also serve as significant barriers to the movements of animals. Many animals have long- established movement patterns. For instance, they move when they migrate, when they search for breeding grounds, and when they look for food.But roads present animals with unnatural obstacles. Some species, like the pronghorn, a large mammal that resembles a deer and lives in North America, are reluctant to cross roads or other manmade barriers.
