Why should we learn linguistic?

Linguistics is generally defined as the scientific study of language. Linguistics studies not any particular language, but it studies languages in general. It is a scientific study because it is based on the systematic investigation of linguistic data,conducted with reference to some general theory of language structure. Linguistics analyzes human language as a system for relating sounds(or signs in signed languages) and meaning. There are some branches of study related to sounds such as phonetics,phonology and morphology. Then the study of meaning can be divided into syntax,semantics and pragmatics.

As far as I am concerned, it is important for us to learn linguistic.

First of all, language itself is truly mind-boggling. Sometimes, it is common for us all to learn because we use it every day. As an old saying goes,“Language is to us what water is to fish”. While sometimes we find it difficult to fully understand the language, for instance, the origin of language, the acquisition of language and the application of language etc.. There still exists so many problems waiting us to deal with.

Second, the language is bound up with our lives that it not only presents our daily life but also the culture and political life we lead to. Because the language is a symbol of a nation, once the social and political changes have happened, the language will be influenced. How to lay down and carry out the standard English with so many different understanding of language and the different dialects? In order to solve these problems, we need to conduct adequate research to the linguistic with having a good command of knowledge of linguistics.

It is said that a foreign language is the passport to the world. No matter what kind of foreign language we are going to learn, we have to know some basic knowledge about it like learning linguistics is a good example. Only in this way can we matter the technique of a foreign language and improve our level.

A New Concise Course in Linguistics for Students of English is merely the basic introductory course for the field of linguistics. As time goes on, there are more and more combination between the linguistics and other subjects to form the new

courses,such as psycholinguistics, socialinguistics and neurolinguistics etc.. Many students take it for granted that it is no need to study linguistics. However, English linguistics is a must for any students who major in English.

In fact,leaning linguistics is of great use. Some new modern subjects,such as the artificial intelligence and machine translation, cannot leave the guidance of linguistics. At present day, the linguistic,whose research has already been out of scope of itself, are a leading course. The theories of linguistics has been widely put into use in the humanities and social sciences.

Piaget, a scientist from Switzerland, thought highly of the position of linguistics in the scientific system. “Linguistics,both is terms of its theoretical structure, and as for the tangibility of the mission, is the the most advanced in the humanities and has significant effect to other kinds of science”. So we should pay more attention to the linguistics.
