Empathy

Last year, researchers from the University of Michigan reported that empathy, the ability to understand other people, among college students had dropped sharply over the past 10 years. __16__ Today, people spend more time alone and are less likely to join groups and clubs.

Jennifer Freed, a co-director of a teen program, has another explanation. Turn on the TV, and you’re showered with news and reality shows full of people fighting, competing, and generally treating one another with no respect. __17__

There are good reasons not to follow those bad examples. Humans are socially related by nature. __18__ Researchers have also found that empathetic teenagers are more likely to have high self-respect. Besides, empathy can be a cure for loneliness, sadness, anxiety, and fear.

Empathy is also an indication of a good leader. In fact, Freed says, many top companies report that empathy is one of the most important things they look for in new managers. __19_ “Academics are important. But if you don’t have emotional (情感的) intelligence, you won’t be as successful in work or in your love life,” she says.

What’s the best way to up your EQ (情商)? For starters, let down your guard and really listen to others. __20__ To really develop empathy, you’d better volunteer at a nursing home or a hospital, join a club or a team that has a diverse membership, have a “sharing circle” with your family, or spend time caring for pets at an animal shelter. Everyone is different, and levels of empathy differ from person to person.

That could be because so many people have replaced face time with screen time, the researchers said. “One doesn’t develop empathy by having a lot of opinions and doing a lot of talking,” Freed says. Humans learn by example—and most of the examples on it are anything but empathetic.

Empathy is a matter of learning how to understand someone else—both what they think and how they feel.

Good social skills—including empathy—are a kind of “emotional intelligence” that will help you succeed in many areas of life.

Having relationships with other people is an important part of being human—and having empathy is decisive to those relationships.

II.【2014届甘肃兰州一中冲刺卷四】根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中的两项为多余选项。

16 You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily so, though. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here’s how:

Plan your time carefully. When planning your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First you can decide your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then you can decide a good, regular time for studying. 17 A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you realize what is happening to your time.

Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a comer of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television. When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.

Make good use of your time in class. 18 Listening carefully in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.

Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes. Review the important points that your teacher mentioned in class. If you know what your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material. 19 If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you'll remember it longer.

Develop a good attitude towards tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you to remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don't pass a test, so don’t be over worried.

20 You will probably discover many others after you have tried these. A. There are other methods that might help you with your studying. B. Don’ t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment.

C. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says. D. No one can become a top student unless he or she works hard. E. Maybe you are an average student.

F. Make full use of class time to take notes of what the teacher says in class. G. This will help you understand the next class.
