山西重点中学协作体高二下学期英语暑假作业14专项篇之任务型阅

一、任务型阅读理解
(A)How would you like to pay?
How do you pay for your coffee? Is it with change? I use my tap-and-go card. I don't even need to enter my PIN number or a signature to authorise payment. It's quicker and everybody in the queue is
happy.
Contactless payments are gaining popularity. Those concerned about security will be pleased to know that the amount of money you can spend in one go is limited – in the UK it's currently £30. But if the card is used a few times in a row, a PIN number will be needed. If a thief gets hold of your card and goes on a spending spree, your bank covers you against fraud. Whereas, if someone steals your banknotes, that's your bad luck!
For those who are always forgetting where they put their cards, there's a new solution:wearable tech: clothing and accessories that have integrated electronic technology. Kenneth Cukier, an economist and technology expert, says: \simply take any wireless card and the chip from it that your bank might issue you with, and you can put it in a coat. When you want to make a payment just wave your arm in front of the terminal and leave the coffee shop with your latte. This is intended for people who don't want to take their card out of their wallet, use their phone or their watch.\
Good, isn't it? And new ways of spending money are not stopping there. The future is all aboutbiometrics. Very convenient if you are at the beach or a festival – there's a new system in development which will make it possible to read the unique maps of veins under the surface of your finger, and use them to authenticate payments – or prove that it's you making the payments. You just need to remember which finger you registered with.
So spending money is becoming easier all the time. And the temptation to buy more stuff increases. But it's worth bearing in mind that earning the money in the first place will still require the same effort. Back to work then! 测验与练习

(二)The daily commute
The daily journey to and from home and work is one of those things that many of us have toendure. Whether by train, bus, bike or on foot, it's a routine that some people could rather do without but if we have to work, the daily grind is all part of the job!
We all have stories of commuting nightmares – a tube train stuck in a tunnel or a bus journey where people are packed in like sardines. In London, where there is an extensive transportnetwork, complaining about delays, cancellations and

the price of their season ticket, has become a commuter's favourite past time but their problems are relatively minor compared to ones that travellers in other parts of the world face. In Nairobi, for example, commuters have to keep windows shut to avoid someone stealing their belongings. It's no surprise that the daily commute is stressful and according to research, women are more likely to experience stress during their journey than men. This is because they're more likely to do something which is being called 'trip chaining' – where they make one or more stops on the way to work or when going home – for example to drop off or pick up the kids from school – and this makes it more likely that something will go wrong with their journey.
The stress of commuting can be bad for your health too especially if you travel longer distances. According to Christine Hoehner, researcher at Washington University School of Medicine \work were less physically active, less physically fit, weighed more and had higher blood pressure than those people who had shorter commutes.\
But the American researcher must be talking about commuters who aren't engaged in active travel, because if you cycle a longer distance then you're likely to be more physically active. However there is a risk of being knocked off you bike and there's the embarrassment of wearing clothing made of Lycra! What's your journey to work, college or school like? 测验与练习

(三)Working in space
Bored with your life? Dreaming of something different? When I feel like that I look up and wonder what life would be like 400km above my head. That's where the International Space Station orbits the Earth, with six astronauts living and working on board, for months at a time.
How do they sleep? They spend the night floating in a sleeping bag inside a small cubicle on the ceiling. American astronaut Sunita Williams explains: \little phone booth but it's pretty comfy and it doesn't matter if I turn over and sleep upside down. I don't have any sensation in my head that tells me I'm upside down.\Brushing your teeth in a place where you can't have a tap or a sink can be a challenge. Can you imagine the mess that running water would make in zero gravity? Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield uses a straw to put a big blob of water from a sealed bag onto an ordinary toothbrush and adds a little toothpaste - which he has to swallow when he's done.
Daily exercise is essential. The lack of gravity makes bones more brittle(容易断裂的) and muscles lose strength – so astronauts are encouraged to work out for at least two hours a day.
The role of astronauts in the International Space Station is to act as lab technicians for scientists back on Earth. So they spend their time maintaining their environment and performing and monitoring experiments in a confined space about the size of a Boeing 747. Almost every task is carefully planned by mission control (航天地面指挥中心)- although most astronauts spend their first days losing stuff until they get used to sticking everything they use to the walls with Velcro, duct tapeor clips.
One of their most valued perks(好处) is the view from \by that gigantic blue ball down there, sitting in the darkness of space. Wow! Absolutely breathtaking(壮观的)! 测验与练习
