Do we organize our thoughts in different ways because of the culture we belong to? If it is so, how can we describe those differences?
The idea of different “cultural thought patterns” was first put forward by an American professor, Robert Kaplan, in the 1960s. He had been looking at the writing style of non-native students at his university in California. He found that the writing styles changed systematically, according to the cultural origins of the students.
For example, in his opinion, native speakers of English usually went “straight to the point”. However, speakers of Semitic languages (such as Arabic and Hebrew) kept backtracking, and then returned to the point. Speakers of oriental languages (such as Chinese) were likely to approach the topic only little by little, as if they were moving around it in circles. Speakers of Romance languages (such as French and Spanish) were likely to stay away from the point, making it harder for readers to follow. Speakers of Slav languages (such as Russian) often included ideas which didn’t seem to be connected in any way to the development of the article.
This view attracted a lot of attention as soon as it was expressed. People said it was not based on enough evidence at all, and it was biased because it was in support of English (which seemed to offer the “most useful” way of presenting the point of view). Russian students, in particular, did not agree with the idea Kaplan had of them.
But Kaplan’s work at least reminded us that people from different cultural backgrounds do have different ways of presenting ideas, or telling stories, and that, even if these differences are difficult, and perhaps impossible to sort out, just knowing that they exist can help us to understand and appreciate each other better.

Word spread quickly that Park’s Hardware would be closing.
Locals begged with Lin, the owner of the store, with no result. Running a small, family-owned hardware(五金器具) business was no longer a profit maker. The town’s affection for Park’s Hardware was just not enough to allow it to fight against the big warehouse stores down the road in Bangor.
It’s difficult to see a hardware store go. A hardware store is special because it sells the things that allow us to DIY, and in the process improves our surroundings to suit our tastes. There are few things more satisfying than a new coat of paint on a weary wall.
Some might argue this might be accomplished by shopping at the big warehouse stores. Well, maybe sometimes, but certainly not always. I remember once I was searching in one of a Bangor stores for a wireless door chime(音乐门铃) that Park’s didn’t carry. I found one, but didn’t understand the instructions on the package. I asked a clerk. The man took the package, examined it, said he didn’t know and walked away.
If I were at Park’s and asked, “Lin, can you … please …?” Lin would spring into action and together we would mix and match and measure until we made it.
Was it more expensive to shop at Park’s as opposed to a warehouse? In one way, yes---if I wanted to buy something big-ticket. But otherwise, no: I could buy a single screw at Park’s, and have it lovingly put in a little bag, for five cents---no charge for the accompanying pleasant conversation. At a warehouse I had no choice but to buy a box of hundred screws, and, if I were fortunate, receive at the cash register a “Have a nice day”. 27. Park’s Hardware would be closing because ___________. A. the owner was moving C. it couldn’t earn money
B. locals begged its owner D. the affection was not enough
28. Why does the author write his experience in a Bangor store? A. To indicate Park’s lacked wireless door chimes.
B. To describe the impolite behavior of the clerk. C. To show respect for Lin’s good manners. D. To compare different serving attitudes.
29. The underlined sentence in the last paragraph means “____________”. A. One had to pay if accompanied in the big warehouse store. B. One could have nice conversations in the big warehouse store. C. One was usually pleasantly treated in the big warehouse store. D. One was unlikely to be accompanied in the big warehouse store. 30. The author felt _________ that Park’s Hardware would be closing. A. fortunate.

What is the difference between happy people and unhappy people? 31 Read the following list of things that HAPPY people do differently from UNHAPPY people and you will know.
Well, I can tell you for sure that those people who are really happy, FEAR less and LOVE a lot more. They see each moment, each challenge, each person as an opportunity to discover more about themselves and the world around them. 32
Happy people understand that you can’t really change a situation by resisting it. But they can feel better by understanding that there might be a reason for its existence. 33 But rather, they ask themselves questions like: What can I learn from this? How can I make this better? They always seem to be pleasant and hopeful no matter what happens to them.
They do the things they do because of the meaning it brings into their lives and because they get a sense of purpose by doing so. 34 They care more about living a life full of meaning rather than, what in our modern society we would call, living a successful life. The fact here is that most of the time they get both, success and meaning, just because they choose to focus on doing the things they love the most.
35 They make sure that their actions bring meaning and happiness in the lives of many. They look for ways to give and to share the best of themselves with the world and to make other people happy.

My wife, daughter, and I moved into our home nine years 36 . We live on a corner, higher than street level, and the entire yard is 37 by a professionally built rock wall. The front of the house though is another story because 38 a wall along the sidewalk, the rocks appear to be just thrown up onto the dirt as if 39 were in a hurry to finish.
We called this area our ‘rock garden’. Whenever we had leftover flowers or plants, Denise or I would stick them out front, just to bring some 40 to the area.
Last summer, in the end of the rock garden I found a tiny little 41 that I could not immediately 42 , I knew I didn’t plant it and Denise claimed that she didn’t either. We decided to let it continue growing until we could 43 what it was.
Weeks passed and the 44 plant appeared to be a Sunflower with a tall skinny stalk and only one head on it. As I pulled rocks from the area to get to the weeds, I noticed something 45 . The Sunflower had not started 46 I saw the stalk begin. It 47 had begun under a big rock and grown 48 and around it to reach the sun.
That’s when I realized that if a tiny little Sunflower didn’t let a big rock stand in its 49 of developing, we too have the capability of doing the 50 thing. Once our environment begins to see that we believe in ourselves like that little sunflower, we can get the same nourishment as well.
Stand tall 51 the Sunflower and be 52 of who and 53 you are and the environment will begin to support you. Never 54 in face of challenges and you will find a way to go under or around your big obstacle in order to 55 your desires.
